General information
The parking space detection function is used for simple location of suitable parking spaces. All detected parking spaces are shown in the display of the instrument cluster. Parking space detection can be switched on and off manually.
Function requirements
- Engine running or drivetrain operational
- Vehicle speed below 35 km/h
- No anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) intervention during last 5 s.
Function
The parking space search/detection function is realized through the external distance sensors in the front bumper. These monitor the area to the left and right of the vehicle and therefore have a larger range than the other distance sensors. Basically, suitable parking spaces on both sides of the vehicle are searched for. A parking symbol (6) is displayed in the instrument cluster during parking space search/detection.
Detected parking spaces are indicated in the instrument cluster by means of directional arrows (7, 8). The directional arrows (7, 8) indicate on which side of the roadway suitable parking spaces have been detected. If the parking system has detected a suitable parking space and the parking procedure has started, various driving instructions and messages are shown to the driver in the instrument cluster or central display.
In the speed range from 0 to 18 km/h, the parking system operates in mixed mode between obstacle and parking space detection. At more than 18 km/h, the parking system changes to the parking space detection function and is active up to 35 km/h.
Parking space detection evaluates the following function-relevant parameters for the parking space search/recognition function:
- Drive range
- Electric power steering status
- Wheel speeds and direction of rotation
- Steering wheel angle
- ABS and ESP® status
- Trailer recognition (vehicles with trailer hitch)
The trajectory (g) consists of two arcs and forms the path to be taken into the parking space.
