Multifunction outputs (MFA):
The parameterizable special module (PSM) control unit (N26/16) has a total of 25 discrete outputs. These MFAs can be configured individually. There are various types of multifunction outputs that have different properties.
However, all outputs can be parameterized so that they "flash" on activation ("Soft PWM", maximum frequency 10 Hz).
Special PWM outputs are available for higher frequencies.
| MFA_POWER | 2 high-side outputs | with operating current 10 A | MFA 02, 04 | |
| 6 high-side outputs | with operating current 5 A | MFA 01, 03, 05-08 | ||
| MFA_PWM | 2 low-side outputs | with operating current 1 A | PWM-capable | MFA 13, 14 |

All outputs can hold their respective rated load for an unlimited time. The simultaneous use of all rated currents at all outputs is also permissible.
One of the eight PWM 0.5 A outputs (MFA 9-12 and MFA 15-18) can be loaded with up to 0.6 A, provided that the others have a maximum of 0.5 A and the sum of the currents of these eight outputs does not exceed 4 A.

Properties
Soft PWM
Turn signal function up to 10 Hz. Configurable via the "Const/Pulse", "Cycle Time" and "Pulse Time" signal inputs.
Current measurement
The measured current can be accessed via the "Current" result signal. Measuring range of outputs: typically 1.5 - 49 A.
Measurement of voltage
Measured voltage is accessible via the "Voltage" result signal.
Load detection
Configurable load detection. The limit value can be configured using the "Open load threshold" parameter. If the output is activated and an operating current exceeds the configured limit value, a load is detected which is signaled by the "Load detect" result signal.
Short circuit detection and open circuit detection
Short circuit detection and open circuit detection is active when the output is activated. Detection takes place via the measurement of the output current.

The parameters for "Safety objective active" and "Safety status" can be configured individually for each MFA.
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Safety objective active | Configures the status of the MFA when "Safety objective active" is activated and the control unit switches to a safe state. | Safety status | |
| Reactivation attempts | Determines how many reactivation attempts are performed in the event of overload or short circuit before the MFA is switched off. |
| Check "Stuck at" fault. | Configures short circuit monitoring in the switching direction. |
| Open load threshold | Configures the threshold value for detecting the open load in mA. |
| Name | Description | |
|---|---|---|
| Active | If the assigned result signal value is not equal to 0, the MFA is active. | |
| Const/pulse | Soft PWM | If the assigned result signal value is not equal to 0, the MFA pulses with a defined cycle and pulse time. |
| CutOffReset | If the assigned result signal value changes from 0 to 1, the MFA is enabled again after the overload shut-off. | |
| Cycle time | Soft PWM | The assigned result signal value defines the cycle time in ms. |
| Pulse time | Soft PWM | The assigned result signal value defines the pulse time in ms. |

| Status (MFA_0x_Stat) | The logical result signal value is TRUE if the MFA is active. |
| Stuck (MFA_0x_Stuck_High) | The logical result signal value is TRUE if the MFA has detected a short circuit in the switching direction while the MFA is switched off. |

| Current (I_MFA_0x) | The result signal value for current measurement in 1 mA/bit. |
Examples
If a logical "0" is present at module input '"const/pulse", soft PWM is not active In this example: As long as MFE 10 is not switched on, the MFA is constantly switched on.
The soft PWM is active by switching on MFE 10. The signal result assigned to the "cycle time" signal input is 1000 and the signal result assigned to the "pulse time" signal input is 500 by configuring the PLC constants block:
Use of MFA with soft PWM
| Cycle time | 1, 000 ms |
| Pulse time | 500 ms |
| Results in a duty cycle of 50%: | |
| 500 ms every second |
The MFA now flashes instead of being constantly lit when MFE_09 and MFE_10 are switched on.
