Engine speed control function
The parameterizable special module (PSM) control unit (N26/16) enables functions in the CDI control unit (N3/28, N3/31, N3/33, N3/40, N3/47) or ME-SFI control unit (N3/34, N3/36) to be influenced.
For this purpose, the parameterizable function module for engine speed control has been implemented, which ensures correct operation of the CDI control unit (N3/28, N3/31, N3/33, N3/40, N3/47) or the ME-SFI control unit (N3/34, N3/36).
It is possible to set a specified value for engine speed, maximum engine speed, maximum engine torque and maximum vehicle speed via the engine speed control module. These functions are distributed across various sub-modules (see picture below). If a function is not required, it can be deactivated via the associated sub-module.
However, in order to map a function such as working speed control, for example, it is generally necessary to parameterize multiple sub-modules. The individual modules for engine speed control are shown in the picture below.
Working speed control function
The actual rpm of the engine can be regulated via the working speed control function.
Multiple fixed rpm values can be specified, and the rpm can also be freely adjusted via a pushbutton.
For safety reasons, the working speed control function can only be used on a stationary vehicle with the parking brake applied.
Engine speed control
The input factors and initial parameters are described in general in the overview picture. A detailed description of the inputs and outputs of the module, including possible settings, can be found in the respective sub-module.
The parameterizable special module (PSM) control unit (N26/16) can activate the output of rpm limits, torque limits and speed limits via inputs or signals from the body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH).
The following conditions must be fulfilled for this function:
- The correct function module for the limitation is active.
- Circuit 15 ON
- Working speed control not active
If these conditions are fulfilled, it is then possible to activate the output of limit values via the inputs of the respective module.
Working speed control enables the body manufacturer (ABH) to adjust the engine speed.
- Use of a cruise control switch to increase, reduce or resume rpm
- Use of the body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH) for direct specification of the rpm
- Use of the body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH) to increase, reduce or resume the rpm
Working speed control ensures that sudden changes in rpm or exceeding the parameterized minimum and maximum rpm are not possible. In the event of a fault, the system attempts to set the lowest possible rpms (idle speed) or to completely deactivate working speed control.
With working speed control, the following input conditions can be parameterized for internal function enabling:
- Parameterization of internal inputs via menu items: "Special functions → Engine speed control → Working speed control, input":
- Requirement for enabling of working speed control: Transmission in neutral position
- Requirement for enabling of working speed control: Freely parameterizable CAN signal
- Request for "Working speed control" function via an input
- Request for "Working speed control" function via body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH)
- Parameterization of module via menu items: "Special functions → Engine speed control → Working speed control, properties":
- Activate "Working speed control" function
- Request for "Working speed control" function via power take-off
- Requirement for enabling of working speed control: Engine at idle
- Requirement for enabling of working speed control: Clutch
- Freely parameterizable CAN signal: Threshold value
- Freely parameterizable CAN signal: Evaluation of threshold value
- Freely parameterizable CAN signal: Inversion (with bit signals only)
- Waiting time until enabling of function
- Waiting time after operation of clutch pedal
- Limitation of minimum engine speed via the "Working speed control" function
- Limitation of maximum engine speed via the "Working speed control" function
- Limitation of maximum engine torque via the "Working speed control" function
- Maximum speed in working speed control mode
- Accelerator pedal lock
The following conditions are always checked to enable the "Working speed control" function, i.e. these conditions are fixed:
- Parking brake "ACTUATED".
- Brake "ACTUATED".
- Circuit 15 "ON"
- Power supply in normal range
When these conditions are fulfilled, the internal function enabling can be activated via an input or via the body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH).
If internal function enabling has been activated, the rpm specification in the PSM control unit can then be output and changed. The possibilities for changing the rpm are listed below in the sequence corresponding to their priority (fixed engine speed, hand throttle actuator, increase, reduction or resumption).
"Rpm limitation" function
The PSM control unit can activate output of rpm limits, torque limits and vehicle speed limits via inputs or signals from the body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH).
The following conditions must be fulfilled for this function:
- The correct function module for the limitation is active.
- Circuit 15 "ON"
- Working speed control not active
If these conditions are fulfilled, it is then possible to activate the output of limit values via the inputs of the respective module.
"Fixed engine speed" function
3 different fixed rpms can be output via inputs or the body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH). Each fixed engine speed can be assigned a run-on time of up to 25.5 s. If a fixed engine speed is selected, it is approached using a ramp. If no fixed engine speed is selected, the lower rpm limit of the working speed control is approached with a ramp when none of the other rpm changes is active.
Hand throttle actuator
The hand throttle actuator can be operated either via an analog input (input 07 or 08) of the parameterizable special module (PSM) control unit (N26/16) or via the body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH) (signal 0x3053 (Requested engine speed for working speed control)). In both cases, the rpm is pegged between the parameterized limits (minimum and maximum) of the hand throttle actuator.
To activate the hand throttle actuator, the accelerator pedal module must be in a rest position and the engine speed must be in a stable condition.
When using an analog input, it is possible to switch the hand throttle actuator on and off via the input "Value for hand throttle actuator via analog/digital converter".
When the hand throttle actuator is activated, a ramp is initially used to approach the set rpm. Once this rpm has been reached, the changes made at the hand throttle actuator are forwarded directly.
Use commercially available hand throttle actuators, e.g. those used on Mercedes-Benz trucks. Use a high-side output of the PSM control unit as a power supply for these hand throttle actuators. Failure to do so may result in severe fluctuations in engine speed.
"Rpm change" function
This operating mode has the lowest priority and can therefore only be used when neither the fixed engine speed nor the hand throttle actuator are active.
The input sources are either the cruise control switch, inputs at the PSM control unit or signals from the body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH). The functions are "Increase rpm", "Reduce rpm" and "Resume rpm".
The rpm changes have 2 operating modes: the stage mode and the ramp mode.
In the stage mode, the rpm is reduced or increased by the parameterized stage height each time an input is actuated. If the input remains actuated, the system changes to ramp mode. A ramp with the parameterized ramp slope is then output. This ramp stops either when a rpm limit is reached or when actuation of the input is canceled.
If the "Hand throttle actuator" or "Fixed engine speed" function is activated, then it will not be possible to switch between stage and ramp mode.
The rpm resumption functions similarly to cruise control. If this input is actuated, a previously stored rpm is approached again. This is done using a ramp.
The rpm is stored each time an input used for increasing or reducing the rpm (in stage or ramp mode) is actuated. If working speed control is deactivated and reactivated, the current engine speed is adopted as the new start value. Actuating the resumption function sets the original rpm again.
The value for resume is only stored until the PSM control unit changes to rest mode (e.g. if the vehicle is parked for an extended period). The value is stored for the duration of "Circuit 15 ON".

- Threshold (value range = 0 to 65, 535 rpm)
- Threshold evaluation, selection = Value must be higher or lower than threshold.
- Invert (only with bit signals), selection = "Yes" or "No" Waiting time after operation of clutch pedal
The status of the clutch must be in the parameterized state (DEPRESSED/FULLY DEPRESSED) for the parameterized period so that the "Working speed control" function is enabled.
If the parameter for waiting time after "Clutch depressed" is set to 0, checking of the clutch status is deactivated in the function module for working speed control.
Waiting time until enabling of function
In order for this condition to be regarded as fulfilled in the function module for working speed control, the time which is stored in the parameter "Waiting time until enabling of function" must expire after all other input conditions have been fulfilled. Waiting time after operation of clutch pedal
Depending on the parameterization, the clutch status must be "Clutch depressed" or "Clutch fully depressed" and this must be the case for the period of time that is stored in the parameter "Waiting time after actuation of clutch pedal". Signals of working speed control function that are stored in the signal pool
Enabling of working speed control
This bit signal is used as an enabling signal for additional function modules for working speed control. It is set by the function module for working speed control.
This signal is set when the inputs of the function module for working speed control are valid, the times for function enabling and the clutch waiting time have elapsed and one of the working speed control requests (input, body manufacturer CAN (CAN ABH), power take-off) is active. The request to activate the working speed control is forwarded via the interior CAN (CAN B).
Specified value of rpm ("Rpm change" module)
This 16-bit value is calculated by the rpm change function module and is the specification for the rpm forwarded via the interior CAN (CAN B). This rpm is always within the range of the current minimum value and maximum value of the rpm limitation and is calculated based on the inputs at the rpm change function module.
This value is valid whenever the inputs of the function module for rpm change and the signal "Enable working speed control" is active.
Current maximum rpm limit ("Rpm limitation" module)
This 16-bit value is selected by the function module for rpm limitation based on the parameterization for the maximum rpms from the inputs. If more than one input is active at the same time, the lowest maximum engine speed is selected in each case.
This value is determined depending on the status of the bit signals "Enable working speed control" and "Request for working speed control ("Power take-off module)" based on the following parameters:
- Limitation of maximum engine speed via the "Working speed control" function
- Limitation of maximum engine speed via the "Power take-off" function
This value is valid if the inputs of the function module for rpm limitation are valid and the "Enable fixed engine speed" signal is active.
Current minimum rpm limit ("Rpm limitation" module)
This 16-bit value is selected by the function module for rpm limitation based on the parameterization for the minimum rpms If more than one input is active at the same time, the highest minimum engine speed is selected in each case.
This value is determined depending on the status of the bit signals "Enable working speed control" and "Request for working speed control ("Power take-off module)" based on the following parameters:
- Limitation of minimum engine speed via the "Working speed control" function
- Limitation of minimum engine speed via the "Power take-off function"
This value is valid if the inputs of the function module for rpm limitation are valid and the "Enable fixed engine speed" signal is active.
Current maximum torque ("Rpm limitation" module)
This 16-bit value is selected by the function module for rpm limitation based on the parameterization for the maximum torques. If more than one input is active at the same time, the lowest torque is selected in each case.
This value is determined depending on the status of the bit signals "Enable working speed control" and "Request for working speed control ("Power take-off" module) 2" based on the following parameters:
- Limitation of maximum engine torque via the "Working speed control" function
- Limitation of maximum engine torque via the "Power take-off" function
This value is valid if the inputs of the function module for rpm limitation are valid and the "Enable fixed engine speed" signal is active.
Current maximum speed ("Rpm limitation" module)
This 8-bit value is selected by the function module for rpm limitation based on the parameterization for the maximum speed. If more than one input is active at the same time, the lowest speed is selected in each case.
This value is determined depending on the status of the bit signals "Enable working speed control" and "Request for working speed control ("Power take-off" module)" based on the following parameters:
- Maximum speed in working speed control mode
- Limitation of maximum speed via the "Power take-off" function
This value is valid if the inputs of the function module for rpm limitation are valid and the "Enable fixed engine speed" signal is active.
Specified value of rpm ("Fixed engine speed" module)
This 16-bit value is selected by the function module for fixed engine speed based on the parameterization for the fixed engine speed from the inputs.
This value is valid if the inputs of the function module for rpm limitation are valid and the "Enable fixed engine speed" signal is active.
Enabling of fixed engine speed
This bit signal is used as an enabling signal for additional function modules for working speed control. It is set by the function module for fixed engine speed and rpm limitation.
This signal is set when the inputs of the function module for fixed engine speed are valid, the times for function enabling and the clutch waiting time have elapsed and either the signal "Enable working speed control" or "Request for working speed control ("Power take-off" module)" is active.
Specified value of rpm ("Hand throttle actuator" module)
This 16-bit value is calculated by the hand throttle actuator function module from the inputs. The rpm is converted on a linear basis between the parameterizable limits "Minimum engine speed via the hand throttle actuator" and "Maximum engine speed via the hand throttle actuator".
This value is valid if the inputs of the function module for rpm limitation are valid and the "Enable fixed engine speed" signal is active.
Ramp mode "ACTIVE" (otherwise pulse mode)
This bit signal is used by the rpm change function module in order to switch from stage mode to ramp mode For this purpose the function module for pulse and ramp mode evaluates the actuation duration of the inputs for rpm change and sets this signal as soon as the actuation duration exceeds the time stored in the "Ramp switchover time (stage or ramp mode)" parameter.
This value is valid if the inputs of the function module for rpm limitation are valid and the "Enable fixed engine speed" signal is active.
