General
The Wi-Fi hotspot function makes it possible to use the internet wirelessly in the vehicle using mobile terminals. The function is provided by multimedia system control.
Function requirements
- The Wi-Fi function is activated in the multimedia system.
- The multimedia system control is connected to the internet (not with tethering).
To use the function in Mercedes me countries, data volume must be purchased from the mobile network provider or there must be a telephone control unit installed.
Wi-Fi hotspot via the vehicle's internet connection
The multimedia system control acts as a Wi-Fi access point to exchange data with mobile terminals via the Wi-Fi antennas and routes the signals to the internet.
Depending on the vehicle model designation and the equipment installed, the multimedia system can use both an internet connection via the telematics services communication module and an internet connection via the telephone control unit for the Wi-Fi hotspot. In this case, the user must define in the multimedia system which internet connection is used for the Wi-Fi hotspot.
Wi-Fi hotspot via tethering
The multimedia system connects to a mobile device that is used as a Wi-Fi access point. The mobile device routes the data to the internet. The data plan of the connected mobile device is used for the data connection.
Establishing a connection to the Wi-Fi hotspot
Depending on the model and the equipment installed, the following options are available for establishing connections to the Wi-Fi hotspot:
- WPS pin (entering a pin on the mobile device or in the multimedia system)
- WPS PBC (pressing a button on the mobile device)
- Security key (entering a security key on the mobile device)
- Near Field Communication (NFC)
- QR code
The multimedia system supports Wi-Fi standard IEEE 802.11ac and all older standards.
The WPA2 encryption standard is used for the Wi-Fi hotspot. In China, WAPI is also supported.
