In the event of an accident involving airbag deployment, the HERMES communication module automatically triggers an emergency call and establishes a connection to an emergency call center.
Since the electronics in the vehicle are becoming more and more complex and there is a risk of them failing if certain consumers are activated, an auxiliary battery for the emergency call system is required. This is because in about 15 to 25 % of emergency call situations, the vehicle's on-board electrical system battery or its feed line are no longer functional after an accident.
Function
If the on-board electrical system voltage is sufficient, the emergency call system should be supplied by the on-board electrical system battery. The emergency call system auxiliary battery forwards the on-board electrical system voltage to the HERMES communication module. If the on-board electrical system voltage is too low in combination with a crash signal received by the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit, the energy supply to the emergency call system will be provided by the internal energy storage unit of the emergency call system auxiliary battery, so that an emergency call can be triggered by the HERMES communication module.
Depending on the vehicle, the emergency call system auxiliary battery receives the crash signal from the SRS control unit or from the combustion engine control unit. The HERMES communication module is supplied with voltage by the emergency call system auxiliary battery. The HERMES communication module receives the crash signal provided by the emergency call system auxiliary battery via LIN It also receives the crash information via CAN using the vehicle's network architecture. In the event of an accident involving airbag deployment, it automatically triggers an emergency call and establishes a connection to an, emergency call center.
The overhead control panel features a built-in status LED which displays the diagnosis information/operating status of the emergency call system auxiliary battery (e.g. low state of charge).
The auxiliary battery should be able to supply the emergency call system with power from the internal energy storage unit for at least 70 minutes.
The following boundary conditions apply here:
- 10 minutes active communication with an average power consumption of 500 mA
- 60 minutes standby mode with an average power consumption of 95 mA
