The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit (N41) is also referred to as "Navigation module". The function and menu guidance are provided by the manufacturer and are not specific for Mercedes-Benz. A comprehensive operator's manual is available through the content manager software from the manufacturer or on the website https://www.beckermappilot.com/shop/login/

General function requirements for navigation
- Circuit 30g ON
- Transport mode not active
- Becker® MAP PILOT control unit is inserted into the mount for the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit (N41-1).
- Signals are available from at least three global positioning system (GPS) satellites.
- Radio (Audio) (N87/2) is switched on.
The navigation system can be restarted via the RESET button at the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit or by briefly removing the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit from the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit mount.
Navigation, general
The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit is supported by the following vehicle components:
- The "Navi" button at the radio (Audio) activates the menu.
- Global Positioning System (GPS) signals from the GPS antenna
- Operation via the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) (with code CL4 (Multifunction steering wheel with trip computer))
- Traffic Message Channel (TMC), reception from FM, AM antenna (A2/51) via FM, AM antenna amplifier (A2/18) and TMC antenna splitter (A28/13)
- Voice control via the hands-free system microphone (B25/4), audio output via the vehicle speakers including audio fadeout, can be adjusted in the system menu of the radio (Audio)
- Picture output and map display on the integrated display of the radio (Audio), also in the instrument cluster (IC) control unit (A1/1). View and menu display are not generated in the radio, but in the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit
- The interface software to the vehicle can be flashed using Daimler processes, and the navigation software only with an Internet-compatible PC (with Content Manager software).
The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit is inserted into the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit mount. A pin (slider) is also required for unlocking, which can be ordered from Mercedes-Benz Accessories as a replacement part.
The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit has a removable rechargeable battery that can also be ordered from Mercedes-Benz Accessories as a replacement part.
Navigation, function sequence
The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit receives the GPS signals for position finding via a direct line from the GPS antenna.
Since GPS operates in the gigahertz range (microwaves) and the signals are weak, reception interference can occur as a result of the following events:
- Atmospheric interference (e.g. inclement weather, water vapor, fog)
- Multi-path reception due to signal reflections (e.g. from building walls)
- Signal shadowing (e.g. in built-up areas, in tunnels, due to high buildings or trees)
Traffic messages for taking into account route calculation are received by the FM, AM antenna. It transmits the signals via a direct line to the FM, AM antenna amplifier and onward via the TMC antenna splitter to the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit.
The control signals from the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (with code CL4 (Multifunction steering wheel with trip computer)) are transferred to the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit via the following route:
- Steering wheel electronics (N135)
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Instrument cluster (KI) control unit
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
- Radio (Audio)
- Telematics CAN (CAN A)
The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit receives the voice input from the hands-free system microphone via a direct line to the radio (Audio) and an analog audio channel. The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit forwards the voice output via a direct line to the radio (Audio). The radio (Audio) amplifies the signals and forwards them to the speaker system.

The display used to show menu guidance, picture and map material is integrated into the radio (Audio). The picture signals generated by the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit are transmitted via a low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line to the radio (Audio).
Theft protection
A theft protection facility can be called up from the menu. The navigation module can be coupled to the vehicle via the vehicle identification number (FIN) by entering a freely selectable "personal identification number" (PIN). The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit then functions only in this vehicle. The theft protection is disabled in the same menu by entering the PIN.
Software update
The navigation software and the map data can only be updated by the customer via the manufacturer's Internet portal. A Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection at the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit is used to access the Internet via the content manager software of the manufacturer.
Map data can be updated via Mercedes-Benz Accessories using a Secure Digital (SD) card slot in the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit.
