Location
One front actuation module, LED exterior lighting and one headlamp control unit each are located on the rear of the left front LED lamp unit and the rear of the right front LED lamp unit.
Task
The front LED exterior lights actuation modules are responsible for the following tasks:
- Provision and monitoring of supply voltage and operating current of actuated LEDs
- Actuation of the LEDs in the corresponding front LED lamp unit to output the light functions:
- Short range low beam
- Long range low beam
- High beams (generated by the left low beam (long range) (E1/1e16) and the right low beam (long range) (E2/1e16))
- Thermal management (temperature monitoring and fan control)
The respective front actuation module, LED exterior lighting actuates the following LEDs located in the respective LED front lamp unit to carry out the individual light functions:
- Left low beam (short range) (E1/1e15)
- Right low beam (short range) (E2/1e15)
- Left low beam (long range)
- Right low beam (long range)
- Left parking/standing/daytime running light (E1/1e13)
- Right parking/standing/daytime running light (E2/1e13)
The front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting are powered by the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1) (circuit 30L).
The individual light functions are output after applying voltage at the respective input channel of the front LED exterior lights actuation module.
The left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting communicates via the left headlamp LIN (LIN G1) with the left headlamp control unit.
The right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting communicates via right headlamp LIN (LIN G2) with the right headlamp control unit.
Identified malfunctions of individual components are stored in a non-volatile memory. The front LED exterior lights actuation modules can be diagnosed using the corresponding headlamp control unit.
The front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting and the headlamp control units are bolted to the front LED lamp unit housings. The headlamp control units are connected to the vehicle-side wiring harness through the electrical connector at the respective front LED lamp unit.
Thermal management
The front LED lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the areas of the actuated LEDs. The front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting evaluate the signals of the temperature sensors.
If the LEDs or the plastic housings of the front LED lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting reduce the actuation currents for the LEDs and thereby lower the heat development.
The front actuation modules, LED exterior lighting also actuate the following components to cool the LEDs or plastic housings of the front LED lamp units:
- Left front lamp unit fan motor (E1/1m5)
- Right front lamp unit fan motor (E2/1 m5)
The front lamp unit fan motors are switched on in combination with the low beams, independently from other functions or boundary conditions.
The active ventilation by means of actuation of the front lamp unit fan motors is used simultaneously for de-icing the front LED lamp units at low outside temperatures.
