General 

The sound generator control unit generates a warning tone for other road users. This is supposed to prevent the electric vehicle from not being noticed at all or being noticed too late by other road users, especially pedestrians. For safety reasons, the sound generator control unit is installed in order to make people aware of the electric vehicle while it is driving or to make pedestrians aware of the vehicle when driving in traffic-reduced areas.

Function requirements

Function 

The sound generator control unit is active during every operation start up to a vehicle speed of 30 km/h and then switches off automatically.

From 30 km/h, the rolling noises of the tires and the wind noises of the vehicle are perceptible and, as a result, the artificial noises from the sound generator control unit are no longer necessary. The sound generator control unit is connected to the vehicle's CAN network.

The ESP® (Electronic Stability Program) control unit uses signals from the rotational speed sensors to calculate the vehicle speed and sends the calculated vehicle speed to the drivetrain control unit.

The drivetrain control unit sends the following signals via the CAN network to the sound generator control unit to implement the function:

• Current selector lever position
• Vehicle speed
• Pedal value

Depending on the speed and the accelerator pedal position, the sound generator control unit emits a sound that is similar to the engine noise of a vehicle with a combustion engine between 0 and 30 km/h.
