General
The ESP® control unit processes the information required for the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®). The ESP® control unit has the following tasks:
- Reading in of input signals
- Evaluation of input signals
- Actuation of component parts
The input signals are read in via direct lines and bus lines.
Direct lines are, e.g.:
- Circuit 30
- Circuit 31
- Traction system hydraulic unit
- Pedal angle sensor
- Dual brake vacuum sensor
- Left/right front axle rotational speed sensor
- Left/right rear axle rotational speed sensor
- Brake vacuum pump relay
The ESP® control unit is a bus system participant. It communicates with the following control units, among others:
- Instrument cluster
- Supplemental restraint system (SRS) control unit
- Combustion engine control unit
- SAM (signal acquisition and actuation module) control unit
- Electric power steering control unit
- Left/right front door control unit
- Electronic ignition lock control unit
- Steering column tube module control unit
- Drivetrain control unit
The read-in input signals are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the affected component parts are then actuated.
The ESP® control unit is located in the engine compartment, next to the brake booster on the traction system hydraulic unit.
Function
The ESP® control unit essentially contains the control for the following systems:
- Regenerative brake system
- Electric parking brake
- Radar-based regenerative brake system
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)
- Electronic brake force distribution
- Anti-lock braking system
- Anti-slip control, electronic traction system
- Brake assistant
- Hill Start Assist
- Flashing adaptive brake lights (except USA version)
- Dry braking
- Brake system precharging, depending on accelerator pedal actuation.
- Brake system precharging depending on lateral acceleration.
- HOLD function
- ESP® trailer stabilization
- PRE-SAFE® system
- Standstill control
- Steer Assist
- Crosswind Assist
- Tire pressure loss warning, tire pressure monitoring system (depending on the model, the tire pressure monitoring system function is integrated in the SAM control unit, e.g. on model 420)
- Limiter
- Cruise control
The ESP® control unit processes these input signals and initiates, among other things, the following actuations:
- Supplemental restraint system (SRS) control unit
- Electrical ignition lock control unit
- Drivetrain control unit
- Brake pedal signal
- Electric parking brake actuator motor, left/right
