Crosswind Assist in general
The Crosswind Assist function detects wind influences that act on the vehicle, and issues optical signals to warn the driver. The visual warning is issued via the multifunction display in the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
Function sequence for Crosswind Assist
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit processes the following input signals to determine the vehicle behavior:
- Status "terminal 15 ON":
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the "terminal 15 ON" status via the chassis CAN.
- Yaw response:
The yaw rate, lateral acceleration and longitudinal acceleration sensor, which is integrated in the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit, detects the movement of the vehicle when it encounters strong gusts of wind.
- Vehicle speed:
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit calculates the vehicle speed from the wheel speeds which the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit reads in directly from the rotational speed sensors.
- Steering angle:
Steering movements are detected by the steering angle sensor. The steering column tube module (MRM) control unit reads in the signals from the steering angle sensor directly and sends them via the chassis CAN.
After processing the signals, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit regulates the one-sided brake intervention at the front and rear axle, thereby generating a yaw motion which counteracts the crosswind. Regulation of the onesided brake intervention is controlled by the ADAPTIVE BRAKE.

Output of warning message
The warning message "Crosswind Assist intervention" is generated in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster (IC) control unit. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit transmits the request to actuate the multifunction display:
- Model 447.8:
- Via chassis CAN, gateway for user interface CAN and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
- Model 447.6/7:
- Via chassis CAN to the instrument cluster (IC) control unit.
