General information

The brake denotes the entirety of all brake systems installed on a vehicle, and its purpose is as follows:

Function

Service brake

The service brake is an assembly of the brake system used to reduce the speed of the vehicle (until stationary, if necessary). The braking effect of the service brake is proportionally applied by the driver using the brake pedal. The service brake acts on all wheels of the vehicle.

Parking brake

The parking brake secures a stationary or parked-up vehicle against rolling away, even on inclined roadways. Unlike the service brake, the parking brake acts on the brake system of one axle. Usually the rear axle. Activation takes place manually using the electric parking brake switch or automatically depending on the driving condition.

Brake and traction system

The brake and traction system (e.g. ABS or ESP®) is used for active safety and it assists the driver in suddenly occurring dangerous situations or in critical driving situations. It includes various subsystems that have a checking, optimizing or regulating function.
