Function requirements, general

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) transmits the status "circuit 15 active" to the 360° camera control unit (N153).

The instrument cluster (IC) control unit (A1/1) calculates the vehicle speed to be displayed and transmits the corresponding signal to the 360° camera control unit (N153) via user interface CAN (CAN HMI) for calculating the switch-off behavior.

360° cameras, general

The system comprises the 360° camera control unit (N153) and four digital 360° cameras. One 360° camera is located behind the radiator trim (front 360° camera (B84)), in the outside mirror housing (left outside mirror 360° camera (B84/1) and right outside mirror 360° camera (B84/2)) and in the liftgate (rear 360° camera (B84/4)) respectively. The 360° camera control unit (N153) uses the picture signals from the 360° cameras to create a virtual top view of the vehicle. There are seven split views and two full-screen views to be selected from. The selected view is shown on the Audio/COMAND control unit display (A40/8). Dynamic and static guide lines, which represent the vehicle dimensions and the lane based on the steering angle, are displayed to assist the driver.

The 360° camera function comprises the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for activating the 360° cameras

By activating the 360° camera button (N74s3), the 360° cameras can be manually activated or deactivated via the control menu of the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6) or automatically by engaging reverse gear or the gear range "R".

Manual activation or deactivation by using 360° camera button (N74s3):

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1) reads in the status of the 360° camera button (N74s3) via the driver assistance systems control panel control unit (N74) and instrument panel LIN (LIN 1) and transmits this via interior CAN (CAN B), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73), gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4) and user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the 360° camera control unit (N153). The 360° camera control unit (N153) then activates or deactivates the 360° cameras.

Manual activation or deactivation using the operating menu of the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6):

The central operating unit (ZBE) control unit (A40) transmits the corresponding request via telematics CAN (CAN A), radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6) and user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the 360° camera control unit (N153). The 360° camera control unit (N153) then activates or deactivates the 360° cameras.

Automatic activation or deactivation:

The automatic activation or deactivation of the 360° cameras must be enabled using the control menu of the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6). The radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6) transmits the corresponding request to the 360° camera control unit (N153) via user interface CAN (CAN HMI).

From the incoming information when the reverse gear or gear range "R" is engaged, the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) generates the status "Reverse gear engaged" (irrespective of transmission variant) and transmits this via interior CAN (CAN B), gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4) and user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the 360° camera control unit (N153). Then, the 360° cameras are activated.

The 360° cameras are deactivated under the following preconditions:

Function sequence for actuating the rear camera cover

The 360° camera control unit (N153) transmits the corresponding request via user interface CAN (CAN HMI), Gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4), interior CAN (CAN B) and electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) to the camera cover (KAB) control unit (N144). The camera cover (KAB) control unit (N144) actuates the rear camera cover motor via the liftgate open switch, exterior operation, reversing camera/360° camera (S202) directly.

The rear camera cover can be opened to clean the lens via the control menu of the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6); no picture is displayed in this case. The radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6) transmits the request "Service mode" to the 360° camera control unit (N153). The path of the signal is the same as that for automatic opening of the camera cover.

IMPORTANT During calibration, the rear camera cover also remains open after deactivation for the duration of the calibration process.

Function sequence for picture recognition, picture output

The recorded picture signals are read in by the 360° camera control unit (N153) via low voltage differential signal (LVDS) lines and processed.

The 360° camera control unit (N153) calculates guide lines, which are shown in the display, taking into account the rotation angle and the stored vehicle parameters. The rotation angle is recorded by the steering angle sensor; this is integrated in the steering column tube module (MRM) control unit (N80). The steering column tube module (MRM) control unit (N80) transmits the corresponding signals via chassis CAN (CAN E), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73), interior CAN (CAN B), Gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4) and user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the 360° camera control unit (N153).

Additionally, the 360° camera control unit (N153) uses the information of the parking system, for example, to mark the areas of the vehicle corners at risk during maneuvering. For this, the PARKTRONIC (PTS) control unit (N62) transmits the information of the parking system via chassis CAN (CAN E), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73), interior CAN (CAN B), Gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4) and user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the 360° camera control unit (N153).

The 360° camera control unit (N153) transmits the request to display the picture signals via user interface CAN (CAN HMI) and the picture signals via low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line to the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6). From there, the picture signals are transmitted via the low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line to the Audio/COMAND display control unit (A40/8) and shown there.

To ensure that the surrounding area can also be recorded in the dark, the ambient illumination is activated, irrespective of the ambient brightness. The 360° camera control unit (N153) continuously transmits the request "Switch on ambient illumination" via user interface CAN (CAN HMI), Gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4), interior CAN (CAN B) and electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1). As the master control unit of exterior lights, it evaluates the ambient brightness and activates ambient illumination, if need be.

Views in Audio/COMAND control unit display (A40/8):

The top view also displays open front doors and/or an open liftgate. The left front door control unit (N69/3) and right front door control unit (N69/4) send the status of the relevant front door via interior CAN (CAN B), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73), Gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4) and user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the 360° camera control unit (N153). The right sliding door control unit (E-LSTR) (N69/6) transmits the status of the liftgate via interior CAN (CAN B), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73), Gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4) and user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the 360° camera control unit (N153). The 360° camera control unit (N153) processes this information; accordingly, one or two open front doors or an open liftgate are shown in the top view. The picture signals from the 360° camera at the respective opened front door or at the opened liftgate are omitted.

When the outside mirror housings are folded up, the areas on the side of the vehicle can no longer be recorded. The corresponding areas are also hidden in the Audio/COMAND control unit display (A40/8) in this case. The left front door control unit (N69/3) and the right front door control unit (N69/4) send the status of the relevant outside mirror housing via interior CAN (CAN B), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73), Gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4) and user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the 360° camera control unit (N153).

A switch can be made between the displayed views automatically as well as manually. According to the gear or gear range engaged, switch is automatically made between the last selected front or rear view. In addition to the automatic selection, different views can also be selected manually using the operating menu of the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6).

The following views are possible on the Audio/COMAND control unit display (A40/8):

System limits:

The functions and representations of the system are limited. Distortion and blind spots can occur.

In the top view, objects outside road level are displayed with distortion.

Objects are displayed with distortion in both full-screen views as well. The assignment of objects in the picture to how they appear in real-life can therefore be unusual.

Depending on the system and model in question, there are various blind spots; these are caused firstly by the positioning above the respective bumper: Here, the 360° cameras lose the visual area directly in front of and behind the vehicle. Secondly, they are caused by the system when the top view is generated, particularly in the four overlapping areas of the fields of view of the 360° cameras.
