Engine Off Energy Management, Function - GF54.10-S-1050TRA

Model 447, 448

Function requirements, general

Engine OFF energy management, general

Engine OFF energy management ensures the stability of the on-board electrical system and the starting capability of the engine when the vehicle is parked.

This functionality is integrated into the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1) and serves to extend the service life of the on-board electrical system battery (G1). To this end, active comfort functions or consumers are switched off if necessary.

Engine OFF energy management encompasses the following subfunctions:

Consumer shutoff

Additional function requirements for consumer shutoff:

Function sequence for consumer shutoff:

If the on-board electrical system voltage drops to ≤ 11.8 V for 5 s, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit activates the consumer shutoff function and sends a request for consumer output limitation or deactivation over the interior CAN to the corresponding control units.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit also actuates the following control units:

Given constant shutoff conditions, one consumer will be shut off every 5 s in addition to the consumer reduction as part of the engine ON energy management function.

The shutoff sequence is shown in the table below. The list includes those consumers whose output is limited or which are deactivated as part of the engine on energy management function.

Even when the on-board electrical system voltage stabilizes at ≥ 11.8 V, consumer output limitation or deactivation is not canceled. Consumer output limitation or deactivation is only ended after another engine start.

No-load current management

Additional function requirements for no-load current management:

Function sequence for no-load current management

The quiescent current management switches off consumers at circuit 30g during long idle periods. The no-load current management is integrated into the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

Quiescent current management however, can accommodate increased power consumption for a specific period after switching off the engine (≤ 75 min). This allows, for example, the radio to be played while the car is being washed. Quiescent current management cyclically measures the voltage and power consumption every 15 min. If an excessively high quiescent current is determined for a specific period, the corresponding relays are opened at the earliest after 75 min, but no later than after 6 h.

After expiration of 6 h, or as soon as the limit value for the on-board electrical system voltage is undershot, thereby compromising the engine's starting capability, the following measures are initiated:

Before opening the corresponding relay, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit sends a signal to power down the control units over the interior CAN and the adjacent connections.

The following relays are switched by the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit:

The no-load current management system comprises the following subfunctions:

No-load current shutoff

The no-load current shutoff system function comprises the following subfunctions:

Request consumer shutoff (no-load current switch)

During the transition from circuit 15R to circuit 15C, the vehicle goes into the operating state called "vehicle rest".

The timer counting down to quiescent current shutoff is then started (waiting time 6 h). The no-load current is continuously monitored by the battery sensor. If the quiescent current is too high, the corresponding relays are opened at the earliest after 75 min.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit reads in the data from the battery sensor over the battery sensor LIN, and evaluates the data. If the on-board electrical system voltage drops during the waiting time to ≤ 11.8 V, the corresponding relays are prematurely actuated.

IMPORTANT At ≤ 11.8 V, the battery sensor will go into sleep mode (reduced power consumption).

The following relays are switched by the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit:

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit sends a switch off signal as advance notice over the heater LIN and interior CAN 5 min before opening the corresponding relays. This shutoff signal is relevant to all control units receiving power via circuit 30g.

For model 447, the following control units receive the shut-off signal over the heater LIN:

The following control units receive the shutoff signal via the interior CAN:

In MODEL 447.6/7 the radio (Audio) forwards the shutoff signal over the telematics CAN (CAN A) to the following control units:

The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit forwards the shutoff signal to the following control units:

In MODEL 447.8, the gateway for the user interface CAN forwards the shutoff signal over the user interface CAN to the following control units:

On model 448.8, the gateway for the user interface CAN forwards the shutoff signal over the user interface CAN to the following control units:

In MODEL 447.8 (with CODE EA1 (Audio 20 CD) or CODE EA2 (COMAND Online with 6-disk DVD changer) or CODE EJ8 (Audio 20 USB) or CODE EJ9 (COMAND Online)), the radio (Audio/COMAND) forwards the shutoff signal over the telematics CAN to the following control units:

On model 448.8 (with code EA2 (COMAND Online with 6-disk DVD changer)), the radio (audio/COMAND) forwards the shutoff signal over the telematics CAN to the following control units:

On model 447.8 (with code EA1 (Audio 20 CD) or code EA2 (COMAND Online with 6-disk DVD changer) or code EJ8 (Audio 20 USB) or CODE EJ9 (COMAND Online)), the radio (Audio/COMAND) forwards the shutoff signal over MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) to the following control units:

On model 448.8 (with code EA2 (COMAND Online with 6-disk DVD changer)), the radio (audio/COMAN D) forwards the shutoff signal over MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) to the following control unit:

If a CAN is in "sleep mode" during signal transmission, the corresponding control units are woken up. The control units will then prepare themselves for power supply shutoff. Within 5 min, these control units will go into "power-down mode" (decentralized power management).

Switch off consumers

After "power down mode" is achieved, the quiescent current management opens the corresponding relay provided no closing causing event has occurred in the meantime. The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit sends the switch status of the corresponding relay over the interior CAN to all the relevant control units.

IMPORTANT Detailed information on the signal flow is given in the chapter "Function sequence for requesting consumer shutoff (no-load current switch)".

The following relays are switched by the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit:

Switch-in consumers

The quiescent current management closes the corresponding relay as soon as a control unit is activated. All the functions are then available again. The relays are not opened until the waiting time of 6 h has expired or the on-board electrical system voltage has dropped to ≤ 11.8 V. If the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit receives a wake-up signal, the no-load current management closes the corresponding relay and signals over the interior CAN that the wake-up conditions for the control units are enabled again. Closing the relay switches in the power supply over circuit 30g again.

IMPORTANT Detailed information on the signal flow is given in the chapter "Function sequence for requesting consumer shutoff (no-load current switch)".

The following activities will trigger the closure of the corresponding relays:

The following relays are switched by the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit:

Quiescent current diagnosis

No-load current diagnosis records data to help troubleshoot possible fault profiles.

The no-load current diagnosis function comprises the following subfunctions:

Activate quiescent current diagnosis

Additional function requirements for activating no-load current

IMPORTANT The circuit 15 status is transmitted by the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit over the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

The battery sensor starts the no-load current diagnosis via the battery sensor LIN if one of the following events occurs:

The first wake-up event causes an entry to be made in the quiescent current fault roll. Following this, the no-load current is cyclically checked. The values will be updated if there are significant changes or if the no-load current diagnosis is canceled.

The following data are stored in nonvolatile memory in the no-load current fault roll:

As long as no-load current diagnosis is active, each additional battery sensor wake-up event will cause the data record to be updated.

Cancel/end quiescent current diagnosis

Additional function requirements for canceling/ending no-load current diagnosis

IMPORTANT The circuit 15 status is transmitted by the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit over the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

The quiescent current diagnosis is canceled when the limit value for the on-board electrical system voltage is undershot. The battery sensor will discontinue no-load current monitoring in order to minimize electricity consumption. Once this happens, no further entries will be added to the fault memory.

Remote charging/jump start

If the on-board electrical system battery does not have enough capacity to start the engine, the on-board electrical system battery must be charged or a jump start carried out.

IMPORTANT One of the front doors must be opened during a jump start procedure or during any testing in the workshop to enable the alternator management to change to the jump starting mode or the workshop mode and the alternator voltage to be increased to 14.3 V.
