General 

Charging the battery while driving assures vehicle mobility and provides a stable supply of electrical energy for all electrical consumers. The energy management calculates the state of charge of the battery beforehand. In order to optimize battery charging, the specified voltage which must be present at the terminal clamps of the battery must be determined for the charging process.

While driving, the battery can be charged by various measures, depending on the version of the on-board electrical system. In all cases, additional electrical energy is either generated or provided by another energy source (electric vehicles).

Function 

12 V on-board electrical system battery 

The 12 V on-board electrical system battery is charged by one of the following measures:

• Energy generation by 12 V alternator (vehicles with 12 V alternator)
• Energy transfer from other energy sources (vehicles without 12 V alternator), e.g. the high-voltage battery (electric vehicles)

Vehicles without 12 V alternator:

Electric vehicles are not equipped with a 12 V alternator. On these vehicles, the necessary electrical energy for the 12 V on-board electrical system is provided by the high-voltage battery via a DC/DC converter.

High-voltage battery (electric vehicles) 

The high-voltage battery is not fully charged by the energy generation of the electric machine in generator mode (recuperation), but the state of charge is primarily maintained through recuperation.
