Remove/Install Rack-And-Pinion Steering - AR46.20-P-0600FRX

DANGER Risk of death  when working on component parts and systems with U >= 30 V alternating voltage (AC) or U >= 60 V direct voltage (DC) Do not touch damaged or defective live component parts and lines or non-insulated electrical connections and lines. AS00.00-Z-0035-01A
WARNING Risk of injury.  Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Deactivate easy entry and exit feature. Model 290
with code 275 (Memory Package (driver's seat, steering column and mirror))
 
2 Move steering wheel forward and upward.    
3 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and fix in place using holding device. NOTES
Do not turn steering wheel with steering coupling removed.
Clock spring contact will otherwise be destroyed.
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Retainer device Fig 2
4 Remove voltage of high-voltage on-board electrical system. Model 290.679  
      AR47.70-P-1000FRH
5 Disconnect ground line from battery.   AR54.10-P-0003FR
6 Remove front wheels.   AR40.10-P-1102A
7 Remove rear and center engine compartment lining.   AR61.20-P-1105FRX
8 Remove tie rods from steering knuckles.   AR46.40-P-0200FR 
WARNING Risk of injury.  Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area of mechanical components when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A
9 Disconnect steering coupling from steering shaft.   AR46.10-P-8000-01FR 
    INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Before connecting steering coupling, make sure that rack-and-pinion steering (1) is in center position.  
    SPECIAL TOOL Engine mount wrench set Fig 1
10 Release and disconnect electrical connectors (2).    
11 Support rack-and-pinion steering (1) and secure against falling down.

Tensioning strap

12 Remove screws (3, 4, 5), remove mounting plates (6) and take off rack-and-pinion steering (1).    
Notice  Notes on threaded connections fastened using a tightening angle-based tightening process   AH00.00-P-0020-01A
Notice  Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace screws (3, 4, 5) and mounting plates (6).
Fit screws (3, 4, 5) first, then tighten in the following sequence: Screws (3), screws (4), screws (5).

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/nut, electric rack-and-pinion steering to front axle carrier *BA46.20-P-1001-01Q 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, rack-and-pinion steering mounting plate to front axle carrier *BA46.20-P-1002-01Q 
13 Remove steering coupling from rack-and-pinion steering (1). When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (1).  
INSPECT Check     
14 Check rack-and-pinion steering (1). After repairing an accident vehicle.  
    If there is a problem,
↓
Replace rack-and-pinion steering (1).
 
15 Install in the reverse order.    
16 Add new steering number of rack-and-pinion steering (1) to on-line vehicle data card via Vehicle Documentation (VeDoc). When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (1).  
    IMPORTANT Redocumentation is absolutely essential.  
MEASURING Measure     
17 Perform wheel alignment measurement.   AR40.20-P-0200FRX
18 Commission electrical power steering control unit. When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (1).
