General
Smartphone integration makes it possible to operate and display the contents of the smartphone via the multimedia system's display and control elements. The multimedia system supports the following integration standards:
- Android Auto
- Apple CarPlay ™
- Baidu CarLife (only for China and only for telematics unit version NTG 6)
Function requirements
- Compatible smartphone.
- Compatible operating system version on the smartphone.
- Telematics unit version NTG 6: The smartphone is connected using a suitable cable to the USB port (Universal Serial Bus) in the front center console.
Exception: On newer vehicles equipped with Connect 5, Android Auto can be used, irrespective of the USB connection.
Example illustration of integration mode
Smartphone integration function
If a smartphone is connected and the corresponding integration standard is activated, then the multimedia system switches to a special operating mode, the "integration mode". In integration mode, the central display shows the smartphone apps. Operation occurs via the multimedia system's control elements.
Only one smartphone can be active at any time through one of the integration standards.
- With telematics unit version NTG 6, smartphone integration takes place through USB. Smartphone integration is then only possible at a USB port with the marking for smartphone integration shown in the picture.
- With telematics unit version NTG 7, a USB connection is no longer required and data is transferred through the multimedia system control's Bluetooth®/WLAN antennas.
When smartphone integration is active with a smartphone, there are the following restrictions:
- Media mode via Bluetooth® is not possible for a smartphone connected to smartphone integration.
- Only one route guidance may be active at a time. If the user starts route guidance on the smartphone and route guidance is active on the multimedia system, then the multimedia system ends route guidance.
When using smartphone integration, an additional mobile phone can be used to make telephone calls via Bluetooth® on vehicles with the two phone mode function.
During active smartphone integration, both the vehicle's voice control system (brief press) and the smartphone's voice control system (long press) may be called up using the voice control button.
Special features of Android Auto
With the Android Auto integration standard, the multimedia system, along with the connection through USB (NTG 6), also automatically establishes a connection to the smartphone through Bluetooth®.
With Android Auto, telephone signals are transferred via Bluetooth®.
Special Apple CarPlay™ features
On vehicles equipped with the Connect 5 NTG 6 telematics unit version, smartphone integration can also take place via WLAN.
The WLAN connection is established here via the Bluetooth® coupling. Both Bluetooth® and WLAN must be activated on the smartphone and in the vehicle.
On vehicles with telematics unit version Connect 5 NTG 6, the WLAN access point is exclusively for the use of Apple® CarPlay.
Special Baidu CarLife features
- Baidu CarLife can only be used with a USB connection.
- When first plugged in, the iPhone starts CarPlay™ first whereupon the user then has to switch once to CarLife. After this, CarLife is always started.
- However, if an Android device is used, CarLife starts straight away automatically.
- Baidu CarLife is not available for telematics unit version NTG 7.
