General information
Evasive Steering Assist can assist the driver if, for example, they want to avoid a pedestrian in a hazardous situation.
If the driver initiates an evasive maneuver through a steering movement, the system supports this request to carry out an evading maneuver by providing the electric power steering with precisely calculated additional steering torques. This helps the driver to avoid the pedestrian in a controlled manner and then makes it easier to straighten out the vehicle, if necessary, with additional assistance from the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®.)
This is how collisions with pedestrians can be avoided or at least it helps to reduce the severity of any injuries.
The assistance is always initiated by the driver and the evading maneuver direction is specified by the driver. The driver can therefore follow either the system activity or override the system.
Evasive Steering Assist is operated together with Active Brake Assist, using the multimedia system.
Function requirements
- Engine running or drivetrain operational
- ESP® not switched to passive
- No ESP® control intervention (only vehicles up to market launch of model 223)
- Drive range "D" engaged
- Straight-ahead driving
- No trailer operation (vehicles with trailer hitch)
Function
To assess the traffic situation in front of the vehicle, Evasive Steering Assist evaluates the information from the front radar sensor and the information from the multifunction camera located behind the windshield.
Evasive Steering Assist also evaluates the following function-relevant parameters:
- Vehicle speed/direction of travel
- ESP® status
- Electric power steering status
- Steering wheel angle
- Wheel angle
- Steering wheel torque (only vehicles up to market launch of model 223)
- Tire pressure monitoring system status
- Trailer recognition (vehicles with trailer hitch)
If the system detects a pedestrian and the driver initiates an evasive maneuver, the system supports this measure.
Evasive Steering Assist is active in a vehicle speed range of approx. 20 to approx. 70 km/h (approx. 20 to approx. 110 km/h as from model 223 market launch).
If the road space monitoring system detects further obstacles in the danger zone, the system does not support the driver's maneuvering requests up to the market launch of model 223.
A warning tone sounds when support is started.
The system calculates the additional steering torque that is implemented by the electric steering in the evading maneuver direction. If physical driving limits are reached as a result of the evading maneuver, the ESP® also intervenes.
Functional restrictions
Evasive Steering Assist cannot always unambiguously detect objects and complex traffic situations. The support function will however, also be unable in some circumstances to avoid a collision.
In such instances, Evasive Steering Assist can react as follows:
- unjustified warning or support.
- no warning or support.
