Rear Shock Absorber Strut Tower Removal (Model 167.1) - Ar64.20-P-1160-01ME

Model 167.1 

IMPORTANT The next steps are shown on the left side of the vehicle. In case of damage on the right side of the vehicle, these steps must be performed analogously.

The higher-level service document as well as the safety information in the service document must be observed.

  1. Expose self-pierce rivets at load compartment floor crossmember (2) and drill out with Ø 6 mm (areas A).
  2. Expose spot welds on the load compartment floor crossmember (2) and cut off (areas B).

  3. Heat up load compartment floor crossmember (2) in the cross-hatched areas

    IMPORTANT Cross-hatched areas are bonded with adhesive.

  4. Remove load compartment floor crossmember (2).

  5. Mark separating point on inner rear longitudinal member (4) and cut (area C).

    NOTES Do not cut too deeply.

    Otherwise the components behind can be damaged and weakened.

    Dimensions: 

    c1 = approx. 15 mm

    c2 = approx. 30 mm

  6. Expose MIG solder seam at inner rear longitudinal member (4) and cut (area D).

  7. Expose spot welds on rear seat belt retractor mounting support (3) and cut off (areas E).
  8. Heat up rear seat belt retractor mounting support (3) in the cross-hatched area.

    IMPORTANT Cross-hatched area is bonded.

  9. Remove rear seat belt retractor mounting support (3).

  10. Expose self-pierce at shock-absorber strut tower (1) and drill out with Ø 6 mm (areas F).
  11. Heat damper strut dome (1) in crosshatched areas.

    IMPORTANT Cross-hatched areas are bonded with adhesive.

  12. Remove damper strut dome (1).

  13. Grind mating surfaces down to bare metal in cross-hatched areas.
  14. Remove grinding dust and drill chips.

    IMPORTANT Observe pretreatment of bonding surfaces.

  15. Grind mating surfaces down to bare metal in cross-hatched areas.
  16. Remove grinding dust and drill chips.
  17. Apply zinc dust paint to the mating surfaces in the cross-hatched areas.

    NOTES The plug weld point may not be coated with zinc dust paint (area G).

    Otherwise adhesion problems may occur.

  18. Grind mating surfaces down to bare metal in cross-hatched areas.
  19. Remove grinding dust and drill chips.
