General
Exhaust turhocharging compacts the suctioned fresh air and increases the fill level of the cylinder. The Engine output increases. There are different charging procedures for exhaust-gas turhocharging.
Function requirements
- Combustion Engine in operation.
Single-speed exhaust-gas turhocharging
The single-speed exhaust turhocharging is realized with an exhaust gas turbocharger.
Function
The exhaust gases reach the turbine wheel via the intake on the exhaust gas turhocharger's turbine wheel housing.
Via a constriction, thermal energy is converted into kinetic energy and the turbine wheel starts to rotate.
The turbine wheel is on the same shaft as the compressor wheel. The compressor wheel is set in motion by the rotation of the turbine wheel and intakes fresh air.
The fresh air sucked in is compressed in the compressor wheel housing and reaches the Engine through an outlet via the charge air cooler.
Multistage exhaust-gas turhocharging
The multistage exhaust gas turhocharging usually takes place with two exhaust gas turhochargers of differing sizes, arranged in succession. Alternatively, exhaust turhocharging can take place with two exhaust gas turhochargers arranged in parallel, e.g. with the Biturbo.
