Function requirements for further telematics services, general 

Additional telematics services in general 

The telematics services of the emergency call system are realized via a mobile radio connection to the Service Center. The emergency call system control unit sends the mobile radio signals via the telephone antenna splitter (A2/109) to the left telephone antenna (A2/102) or the right telephone antenna (A2/103) and receives them in the reverse direction.

IMPORTANT In the event of insufficient reception or failure of the left telephone antenna and right telephone antenna (e.g. defect caused by rollover), the emergency call system control unit automatically uses the emergency call system antenna to receive and transmit the mobile radio signals (A2/52).

The function of the following emergency call system telematics services is described in this document:

IMPORTANT Via the mobile radio connection to the Service Center the emergency call system control unit also receives the trigger signal for the "Remote Start" function (for pre-entry climate control) which the customer transmits via the mobile phone to the service provider. The "Remote Start" function starts the engine on a parked and locked vehicle (windows and doors closed), and after a limited period it switches it off again, to enable the "Load Mode" to achieve a pre-entry climate control of the A/C system. The emergency call system control unit forwards the triggering signal via the diagnostic CAN (CAN D) to the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73).

Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning

Additional function requirement for anti-theft alarm system (with CODE 551 (Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW])))

If the ATA [EDW] is triggered, the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message is sent as follows:

Emergency call system control unit

The "ATA [EDW] alarm" message is sent by the emergency call system control unit to the Service Center via the left telephone antenna or the right telephone antenna. The Service Center receives the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message and advises the vehicle owner by telephone that the ATA [EDW] alarm has been triggered. "Vehicle tracking" not yet triggered by the Service Center.

If the vehicle owner has been informed by the Service Center that his/her vehicle has been stolen or if the vehicle owner notices himself/herself that the vehicle has been stolen, the vehicle owner must then first report the theft to the police. The vehicle owner receives a special number from the police, which confirms that the vehicle theft has been reported. With this number, the vehicle owner can report to the Service Center by telephone and give this number to the employee there. The Service Center checks the request and legitimization (authorization) of the vehicle owner.

Vehicle tracking 

After reporting the theft to the Service Center and legitimization (authorization) by the Service Center, an initiation command is transmitted to the vehicle. The emergency call system control unit receives the initiation command from the left telephone antenna or the right telephone antenna and then activates the GPS position finding and, if necessary, the voice connection to the vehicle. Then the emergency call system control unit sends the position data to the service provider via the same route as the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message. The position data is transmitted cyclically and for the following events:

The Service Center forwards the location of the vehicle to the responsible command staff (e.g. police). The command staff can then decide whether or not to speak to the driver.

IMPORTANT Vehicle tracking can only be deactivated by the Service Center.

Additional function requirements for breakdown assistance 

Roadside assistance 

The breakdown assistance function enables the customer to contact the Service Center, e.g. in the event of a defect on the vehicle. The Service Center can now take further vehicle-specific data into consideration to initiate effective assistance measures. After reading in the breakdown assistance button, the emergency call system control unit sets up a voice connection to the Service Center.

The signal of the breakdown assistance button from the overhead control panel control unit (N70) is transferred as follows:

Emergency call system control unit

After the Service Center replies with a special tone, the emergency call system control unit automatically sends an SMS message containing the following data to the Service Center via the integrated communications module:

IMPORTANT The Service Center can perform a remote diagnosis if necessary.

The emergency call system control unit sends the mobile radio signals via the telephone antenna splitter to the left telephone antenna or the right telephone antenna and receives the mobile signals in the reverse direction.

IMPORTANT In the event of breakdown assistance, other vehicle-related services with lower priority (e.g. MB-Info call) are interrupted.

The light emitting diode integrated into the breakdown assistance button flashes as long as the breakdown assistance is active. This is also shown in the instrument cluster (A1) and on the audio/COMAND display (A40/8).

IMPORTANT In the event of a breakdown assistance instance, the Service Center can transmit map data to the vehicle if necessary. The data is made available to the navigation module of the head unit (A26/17).

Additional function requirement for MB Info 

MB Info 

The MB-Info call function enables the driver to call up information on Mercedes-Benz brand products as well as further voice-based services (e.g. hotel booking). This vehicle-related service is primarily an oral information service that is provided via the communications module integrated into the emergency call system control unit.

IMPORTANT In the event of an MB-Info call, the Service Center can transmit map data to the vehicle if necessary. The data is made available to the navigation module of the head unit.

The signal of the MB-Info button from the overhead control panel control unit is transferred as follows:

Emergency call system control unit

The emergency call system control unit then completes a voice connection to the Service Center. After the Service Center replies with a special tone, the emergency call system control unit automatically transmits an SMS to the Service Center via the integrated communication module.

The automatic SMS of the emergency call system control unit to the Service Center contains the following data:

The emergency call system control unit sends the mobile radio signals via the telephone antenna splitter to the left telephone antenna or the right telephone antenna and receives them in the reverse direction.

IMPORTANT The MB-Info button's integrated light emitting diode flashes as long as the MB-Info call is activated. This is also indicated in the instrument cluster and on the audio/COMAND display.

IMPORTANT In the event of an MB-Info call, other vehicle-related services with lower priority (for example, remote door unlocking) are interrupted.

Additional function requirements for remote door unlocking 

Vehicle remote unlocking 

The remote door unlocking function allows the user to have the Service Center remotely unlock his/her vehicle, e.g. if he/she has locked the transmitter key (A8/1) in the vehicle and a second transmitter key is not available.

The Service Center requests an SMS message with the required data from the vehicle. The emergency call system control unit then automatically sends an SMS to the Service Center. The SMS message contains the following data:

The Service Center compares the data sent with the request and legitimization (authorization) of the user and, if the data matches, sends a "remote door unlocking request" to the vehicle. Upon receipt of the "vehicle remote door unlock request" the emergency call system control unit transmits the request to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the diagnostic CAN. The electronic ignition lock control unit then initiates the unlocking of all vehicle doors and the unlocking of the liftgate.

IMPORTANT The remote door unlocking is displayed by a message in the instrument cluster. In addition, the red light-emitting diodes in the SOS button (N70s11) blink.

IMPORTANT If the Service Center denies the "remote door unlocking request", for example because there is no legitimization, then the remote door unlocking function is locked for 15 min.

Additional function requirements for vehicle remote door locking 

Vehicle remote locking 

The remote door locking function allows the user to have his/her vehicle remotely locked by a Service Center if he/she has forgotten to lock the vehicle.

The Service Center checks the request and legitimization (authorization) of the user. If the data matches, the Service Center issues a "vehicle remote door lock request" to the vehicle. The "remote door locking request" is received by the emergency call system control unit via the left telephone antenna or the right telephone antenna.

Upon receipt of the "vehicle remote door lock request" the emergency call system control unit transmits the request to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the diagnostic CAN. The electronic ignition lock control unit then checks whether locking all vehicle doors and liftgate is possible. If all vehicle doors and the liftgate can be locked, the electronic ignition lock control unit initiates the locking process.

Remote diagnosis ("Remote Diagnosis") 

With the remote diagnosis, diagnostic data is transmitted by the emergency call system control unit to the Service Center via the left telephone antenna or right telephone antenna. Diagnostic data are sent automatically (via scripts, for evaluation) and also manually as part of a breakdown assistance procedure.

Manual remote diagnosis is initialized by the Service Center as part of breakdown assistance. A pop-up window appears on the audio/COMAND display asking the user to confirm initiation of the remote diagnosis. As soon as the user confirms the request, the voice connection to the Service Center is interrupted and the transmission of the diagnostic data starts.

As soon as the diagnostic data has been transmitted, the Service Center restores the voice connection to the vehicle. As well as the diagnostic data, the emergency call system control unit also transmits status information ("TRANSMISSION_SUCCESS" and "TRANSMISSION_FAILURE"). The emergency call system control unit receives the diagnostic data via the diagnostic CAN from the electronic ignition lock control unit as a central interface.

Transmission of vehicle position ("Vehicle Locator") 

This service makes it possible for the user to determine the vehicle's current location by calling or transmitting an Internet inquiry to the Service Center. The user receives the vehicle location either in the form of a map display (web page or iPhone), an SMS or by e-mail from the Service Center.

IMPORTANT The transmission of the vehicle position is not indicated in the vehicle or made noticeable in any other way.

The emergency call system control unit receives the request from the Service Center and then transmits the following data back to the Service Center:

IMPORTANT With circuit 15 OFF (ignition OFF) the emergency call system control unit transmits the last position that was determined. The emergency call system control unit receives the GPS data via the global positioning system antenna splitter (A2/5) from the GPS antenna (A2/23).

The Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) sends the wheel speed and yaw rate signals as follows for basic position finding:

Additional function requirement for notification of a certain speed being exceeded ("Speed Alert")

By making a call or transmitting an Internet inquiry to the Service Center, the user can define a speed for the vehicle which, when exceeded, will cause the user to be notified by SMS or e-mail from the Service Center.

As soon as the Service Center has activated the service, the emergency call system control unit will read in the speed value from the diagnostic CAN at intervals of no more than 5 seconds with circuit 15 ON. If the defined value is exceeded, the emergency call system control unit transmits a message containing the current position data to the Service Center, which notifies the user.

IMPORTANT The emergency call system control unit only transmits one message within a certain time frame. The time frame is defined by the Service Center.

IMPORTANT The speed value can be anywhere in the range between 0 and 255 km/h, meaning that the user can ask for notification as soon as the stationary vehicle is driven away.

IMPORTANT The transmission of data is not indicated in the vehicle or made noticeable in any other way.

Notification if a certain area has been reached or left ("Geo Fencing") 

By making a call or transmitting an Internet inquiry to the Service Center, the user can define areas where the user will be notified by SMS, e-mail or an automatic telephone call when they are entered or left. The areas can be circular or defined as polygons with at least 3 and a maximum of 10 corner points. When polygonal areas are being defined, the corner points must be specified in clockwise order. If overlaps occur when the corner points are being connected, the emergency call system control unit transmits a fault message to the Service Center. Up to 20 circular or polygonal areas can be defined and stored. The standard error tolerance for position finding is 100 m. Whenever the ignition is switched on, the standard error tolerance is set again. For this service, the emergency call system control unit evaluates the GPS data once per minute. As soon as an area limit is reached, the position of the vehicle is determined at shorter time intervals.

IMPORTANT In addition, as soon as an area limit is reached, each ignition change (circuit 15 ON or OFF) is reported to the Service Center.

IMPORTANT The transmission of data is not indicated in the vehicle or made noticeable in any other way.

Transmission of information (e.g. map data) to the vehicle ("Remote Information Feed") 

The user can transfer suitable information to the vehicle via the Internet (e.g. Google Maps, Yahoo) or the Service Center with this service. The data is used in the vehicle by the head unit. All information, including that which is sent via the Internet, is transferred to the emergency call system control unit via the left telephone antenna or right telephone antenna by the Service Center. If circuit 15 is OFF, the emergency call system control unit stores the data in a buffer. If circuit 15 is ON, the emergency call system control unit forwards the received data to the head unit as soon as it is switched on. Information of the following kind can be received by the emergency call system control unit, buffered and forwarded:

IMPORTANT Web addresses and free text can also be transmitted to a different vehicle than your own.

The reception of information is displayed by the head unit by means of a pop-up window on the Audio/COMAND display.

IMPORTANT Map data can be sent by the Service Center as part of an emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB-Info call.

Additional function requirements for transmission of updates to the vehicle ("Remote Update") 

Transmission of updates to vehicle ("Remote Update") 

The software of the emergency call system control unit is updated using this service, without the user having to visit a workshop. If the Service Center transmits a software update request to the emergency call system control unit, the emergency call system control unit downloads the relevant software via the left telephone antenna or right telephone antenna as soon as the conditions required for this have been met.

IMPORTANT The software is not updated immediately after transmission, but only 15 min. after circuit 15 OFF.

The emergency call system control unit transmits notification back to the Service Center that the software update has been successfully carried out.

Visual and acoustic vehicle recognition ("Flash Lights and Sound Horn") 

The visual and acoustic vehicle recognition makes it easier to find your own vehicle if it is outside the range of the transmitter key. The user activates and deactivates the service by making a call to the Service Center. The Service Center transmits an appropriate message to the emergency call system control unit.

The emergency call system control unit then activates or deactivates the panic alarm by sending an appropriate command to the rear SAM control unit.

The commands from the emergency call system control unit are forwarded as follows:

IMPORTANT The panic alarm can also be activated or deactivated by a corresponding application program for mobile devices.
