Internet connection, general
The head unit controls the Internet connection. Depending on the equipment involved, the Internet connection is established through the HERMES control unit (with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) or through the mobile phone system. The Internet contents are shown on the Audio/COMAND® display. While driving, free surfing is not possible on the Audio/COMAND® display. For this, the head unit receives the speed signal from the instrument cluster over the user-interface CAN. The Internet connection, however, can also be used by mobile devices through the head unit as a WiFi hotspot when driving.
The head unit outputs the audio signals from the Internet (e.g. Internet radio) through the speaker system. On vehicles with code 810 (Sound system) the head unit sends the audio signals over MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which then actuates the speaker system.
The following controls can be used for operation of the function:
- Touchpad
The touchpad sends the operation signals over the telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Audio/COMAND® display
The Audio/COMAND® display detects swipe movements and touch movements on the display and transmits the operation signals to the head unit via the telematics CAN.
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
When the voice control system is active, the voice commands are recorded by the driver hands-free system microphone and forwarded over a direct line to the head unit.
- Left lower control panel (manual transmission) or right lower control panel (automatic transmission)
The lower control panel can be used to adjust the volume, e.g. for Internet radio or audio streaming. The lower control panel sends the operation signals to the head unit over the LCP-LIN, touchpad and telematics CAN.
To ensure successful certificate exchange, the head unit synchronizes the date and time.
The Internet connection function is divided into the following subfunctions:
- Internet access (dial-up) over HERMES control unit (with code 362 (HERMES LTE))
- Head unit multifunction steering wheel button group:
The operation signals of the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group are read in by the steering wheel electronics. The steering wheel electronics transmits the operation signals via the steering wheel CAN, the steering column tube module control unit, the suspension FlexRay, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the head unit.

- WLAN hotspot

- The Internet access service is activated.
- The vehicle owner is registered and authorized at the Service Center.
- No active prioritized service (e.g. emergency call).
- Data volume purchased from mobile network provider (not available in all markets)
Internet access (dial-up) over HERMES control unit (with code 362 (HERMES LTE))
The function is activated by calling up the menu on the Audio/COMAND® display. The head unit generates the image data for display on the Audio/COMAND® display and sends them over an HSVL line to the Audio/COMAND® display. The operating request for establishing the Internet connection is sent by the head unit over the Bluetooth® antenna, Bluetooth®/WiFi antenna (A2/161) and the Bluetooth®/WiFi antenna (A2/162) (with code 549 (Connect 20 HIGH (NTG6))) to the HERMES control unit.
The HERMES control unit contains a permanently installed SIM card.
The HERMES control unit can establish an Internet connection here to the mobile network provider over the emergency call antenna and at the same time over the telephone antenna splitter, left telephone antenna and the right telephone antenna. The user can order a volume of data from the service provider. When the data volume limit is reached, any services which use the data volume are unavailable.
Via the Mercedes-Benz Customer Portal, the user can display and expand the available data volume.
Activation of a voice connection (e.g. emergency call or Concierge Service) may interrupt the Internet connection.
Additional function requirements for Internet access (dial-up) through mobile phone system (except code 362 (HERMES LTE))
- The mobile terminal (mobile phone) is equipped with a suitable SIM card and the mobile terminal is connected to the head unit.
- The mobile phone network provider allows the mobile phone to be used for data services.
- The mobile phone network provider allows Secure Socket Layer encryption via the mobile phone network.
- With code 899 (Multifunction telephony):
- The mobile phone is located on the mobile phone cradle control unit and connected to the head unit.
- If the mobile phone supports the PAN profile (Personal Area Network), Internet sharing must be activated.
Internet access (dial-up) over the mobile phone system (except code 362 (HERMES LTE))
The function is activated by calling up the menu on the Audio/COMAND® display. When using mobile phones that support the PAN profile, the dial-up data of the mobile telephone network provider entered into the mobile phone are used.
On mobile phones that support the DUN profile (Dial-up Networking), the mobile phone network provider must be selected on the head unit.
The mobile telephone network provider can either be selected from the country-specific lists or, if the mobile telephone network provider cannot be found in the list, added using "New Provider". Further access information is required (for example, on the tariff) that can be obtained from the mobile telephone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.
Fees: Internet access and services are free from Mercedes-Benz. However, fees must be paid to the mobile telephone network provider in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract. Display options and the option of separating the connection via the "System" menu make cost management easier in time as well as data volume contracts.
Basic telephony

On vehicles with code 899 (Multifunction telephony), the head unit sends the encrypted data over the Bluetooth® antenna, Bluetooth®/WiFi antenna (A2/161) and the Bluetooth®/WiFi antenna (A2/162)
(with code 549 (Connect 20 HIGH (NTG6))) to the mobile phone.
The mobile phone transmits the data as follows to the mobile telephone network:

On vehicles except code 899 (Multifunction telephony), the Internet connection is established through the basic telephony. The head unit sends the encrypted data over the Bluetooth® antenna, Bluetooth®/WiFi antenna (A2/161) and the Bluetooth®/WiFi antenna (A2/162)
(with code 549 (Connect 20 HIGH (NTG6))) to the mobile phone.
Multiple use of the mobile phone: Basically, several functions can be processed simultaneously by mobile phones suitable for Internet access, it is therefore possible, e.g. to make phone calls while connected to the Internet. However, this depends on the quality of the respective network. If the network connection is too weak, the Internet connection is merely maintained while the telephone call is being made.
Additional function requirements for WiFi hotspot
- The WiFi function is activated on the head unit and the WiFi hotspot is configured.
- The head unit is connected to the Internet.
Data volume must be purchased for the vehicle to enable the function to be used.
WLAN hotspot
The head unit acts as a WLAN access point and exchanges data over the Bluetooth® antenna, Bluetooth®/WiFi antenna (A2/161) and the Bluetooth®/WiFi antenna (A2/162) (with code 549 (Connect 20 HIGH (NTG6))) with the mobile terminals and routes the signals into the Internet.
There are the following options for establishing connections to the WiFi hotspot:
- WPS PIN (entering a PIN on the mobile device or head unit)
- WPS PBC (pressing a button on the mobile device)
- Security key (entering a security key on the mobile device)
- Near Field Communication (NFC)
The head unit supports the WiFi standard IEEE 802.11ac and all older standards.
The WPA2 encryption standard is used for the WiFi hotspot. In China, the WAPI encryption standard is also supported.
