Remove/Install Propeller Shaft On Power Takeoff Or Rear Axle Differential - AR41.10-P-0050-18MFA

Model 118, 177, 247 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive) 

  Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts AH00.00-P-0001-01KOA
  Notes on threaded connections fastened using a tightening angle-based tightening process AH00.00-P-0020-01A

Remove 

  1. Make color markings to indicate position of propeller shaft (1) relative to output flange (2a) of power take-off or relative to drive flange (2b) of rear axle differential and to flex disk (3).
  2. Unscrew bolts (A1 to A6 ) from output flange (2a) and bolts (B) from drive flange (2b).

    IMPORTANTSPECIAL TOOL Use counterholder. Helper required.

  3. Release pilot bushings of flexible coupling (3) using a drift (shop-made tool), as shown, from drive flange (2b) of rear axle differential.

    If necessary.

  4. Pull propeller shaft (1) off output flange (2a) or drive flange (2b).

    NOTES Pull the propeller shaft (1) off the drive flange (2b) carefully.

    The pilot bushing (10) in the propeller shaft (1) will otherwise be damaged.

    NOTES Attach the propeller shaft (1) to the drive flange (2b) carefully.

    The pilot bushing (10) in the propeller shaft (1) will otherwise be damaged.

    Install 

  5. Attach propeller shaft (1) to output flange (2a) or drive flange (2b).

    NOTES Align the color markings with each other. Vibrations will otherwise occur.

  6. Tighten screws/bolts (B) at drive flange (2b)

    IMPORTANT Replace the bolts (B).

    SPECIAL TOOL Use counterholder.

    Helper required.

  7. Loosely screw in bolts (A1 to A6 ) at output flange (2a).

    IMPORTANT Replace the bolts (A1 to A6 ).

  8. Turn color marking (arrow) upward.
  9. Tighten screw/bolt (A1 ) to specified torque (1st stage) TORQUE SPECIFICATION
  10. Tighten screw/bolt (A2 ) to specified torque (2nd stage) TORQUE SPECIFICATION

    IMPORTANTSPECIAL TOOL Use counterholder.

    Helper required.

  11. Tighten screws/bolts (A3 , A4 , A1 , A5 , A6 ) in stated sequence to specified torque (2nd stage) TORQUE SPECIFICATION

    IMPORTANTSPECIAL TOOL Use counterholder. Helper required.

  12. Tighten screw/bolt (A2) to specified tightening angle (3rd stage) TORQUE SPECIFICATION

    IMPORTANTSPECIAL TOOL Use counterholder. Helper required.

  13. Tighten screws/bolts (A3 , A4 , A1 , A5 , A6 ) in stated sequence to specified tightening angle (3rd stage)
