WARNING Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; additionally screen off hazardous area if necessary. Check special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection). Wear protective gloves. AS00.00-Z-0001-01A

REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove rear underfloor paneling (2).   AR61.30-P-1001MFA
2 Unclip expansion rivets (3). SPECIAL TOOL Dismantling tool Fig 2
3 Press retaining lugs (4) and remove trim (5).    
4 Detach level sensor from torsion-beam axle. Model 177, 247

5 Insert upper clamping plate (01), lower clamping plate (02) and adapters (03) into spring (1) and fit spring compressor (04). NOTES
Ensure correct seating of the clamping plates (01, 02), adapter (03) and spring compressor (04).
Otherwise correct seating of the spring (1) is not guaranteed.

6 Compress left and right springs (1) with spring compressor (04). SPECIAL TOOL Adapter Fig 5

7 Remove screw/bolts (6).   AR32.25-P-0110MFA 
8 Swing torsion-beam axle (7) downwards. IMPORTANT The spring (1), which is not removed, remains on the torsion-beam axle (7).  
9 Release spring compressor (04) and remove spring (1). SPECIAL TOOL Adapter Fig 5

INSPECT Check     
10 Check spring (1) for damage and corrosion. If the spring (1) is reused.
NOTES
Only repair paint damage using a black touch-up paint pen.
Otherwise it could lead to confusion with the color marking of the rear spring (1).
If the spring (1) exhibits damage and severe corrosion,

Replace spring (1).
 
11 Check upper and lower spring retainers (8) for damage. If the spring retainer (8) is reused.
If there is damage.

Replace spring retainer (8).
 
INSTALLING Install     
12 Position spring (1) in lower and upper spring retainers (8).    
13 Insert spring (1) and spring retainers (8) into mounts (9). NOTES
Ensure correct seating of the spring (1) and spring retainers (8) in the mounts (9).
Otherwise correct seating of the spring (1) is not guaranteed.

14 Compress spring (1) with spring compressor (04) and swing torsion-beam axle (7) upwards IMPORTANT Swing far enough upwards until the screws (6) can be screwed in.
The spring (1) must be installed so that the single color dot points downwards.

15 Counterhold nut on screw (6) and tighten. Remove/install rear shock absorber AR32.25-P-0110MFA 
16 Release spring compressor (04) at both ends and remove. SPECIAL TOOL Adapter Fig 5

    SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 4
17 Remove clamping plates (01, 02) and adapters (03). SPECIAL TOOL Adapter Fig 5

18 Install level sensor of torsion-beam axle. Model 177, 247

19 Install trim (5).    
20 Install rear underfloor paneling (2).   AR61.30-P-1001MFA
INSPECT Check     
21 Check headlamp adjustment and correct if necessary.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 247
