Tires:
- For service conversions, compare the tire/disk wheel designation with the entries in the vehicle documents.
- Always replace damaged and defective tires. The repair methods employed by retail tire suppliers are not approved by Mercedes-Benz. Indentations ≤ 0.8 mm on the side surface of the tire are generally inconsequential and permissible.
- Before mounting the tires, the disk wheels should be cleaned in the area of the bead seat.
- Always observe the manufacturer's specifications for tire pressure sensors.
- Replace tire valves during each tire mounting.
- Only use wheel/tire combinations approved by the manufacturer.
- If the tires have a light spot, the tires and disk wheels must be specifically positioned (matched) on the disk wheels when mounting the tires to ensure the radial trueness of the wheels.
Identification of light spots:
- On the tires through a color dot on the outboard side of the tire.
- On steel wheels through a color dot or punch mark on outboard side of the wheel.
- On light-alloy wheels generally on the valve hole.
- If a single tire is replaced, install it on the front axle. This does not apply to vehicles with different tires of varying specifications on the front and rear wheels.
- Always provide all disk wheels with tires of the same construction, same make and same design.
- Observe country-specific requirements if the maximum permissible speed of an M+S tire is lower than the maximum permissible speed of the vehicle. If necessary, attach a corresponding adhesive label in the driver's field of vision.
- The installation of tires with a higher speed rating is permissible.
- New tires require a run-in phase of a certain length until they achieve their maximum adhesion.
- Install unidirectional tires according to the arrow on the side wall of the tire.
- Tires are subject to an aging process with negative effects on the properties of the tires.
In vehicles from the passenger car and smart divisions, as well as off-road vehicles from the G division with an identical tire/wheel size combination on the front and rear axle, it is possible to replace the wheel and tire assemblies on each axle from the front axle to the rear axle and/or the rear axle to the front axle to equalize tire wear, taking into consideration the running direction.
Tire pressure
An excessively low tire pressure will damage the tire.
In the event of pressure loss, determine and rectify the cause.
Tire pressure monitor
Before replacing a tire, check the manufacturing date of the TPM tire pressure sensor and replace tire pressure sensor if necessary.
Before replacing a tire, check the condition of the TPM tire pressure sensor for damage.
It can otherwise lead to function impairments.
Replace damaged TPM tire pressure sensors.
Cleaning
The use of high-pressure cleaners with round jet nozzles to clean the wheels can lead to tire damage. Such damage occurs especially on the tire side walls. When using flat-spray nozzles be sure to:
- Maintain a distance of at least 30 cm.
- Do not direct the water jet at a single point on the surface of the tire for any length of time.
Storage and handling
Store tires at temperatures above 0°C (32°F).
Lower temperatures can cause cracks in the rubber.
Handling
If the tires are stacked for short-term storage, ensure that they are not deformed.
Occasionally rearrange tires in the event of longer-term storage. Do not crush the tires.
Store accessories in their original packaging at locations where there is no risk of cuts, cracks or perforation.
Tools and aids that do not attack the tires must always be used for handling tires and accessories.
Wear suitable protective clothing when handling tires.
Short-term storage (up to 4 weeks)
- Tires may be stacked one on top of another, if possible on pallets. Observe manufacturer's specifications regarding maximum stack height.
- The tires must be rearranged from top to bottom after 4 weeks. If they are mounted on rims, the tires must be inflated and stored upright or lying down one beside the other on shelves.
Long-term storage
Store tires in such a way that deformation can be ruled out. Observe the manufacturer's specifications.
Disposal
Perform collection, storage and disposal in accordance with the legal requirements and the company's own regulations.
Disk wheels
Only use approved disk wheels. Do not repair damaged or deformed disk wheels.
Otherwise, safety will be compromised.
Note the following points:
- During a wheel change, for example, changing light alloy wheels for steel wheels, ensure that the wheel bolts required for the spare wheel are enclosed in a clearly visible position.
Model 124, 202
The spare wheel is designed as a steel wheel. Vehicles fitted with light alloy rims at the plant have corresponding wheel bolts enclosed.
- Only use wheels of the same design approved by Mercedes-Benz.
General
- Thoroughly clean tires before putting them into storage.
- Mark the position and running direction of the tires with chalk.
- Store tires in a clean, dry, well-ventilated and temperature-controlled location in which they are protected against sunlight and weather influences.
- Do not store tires in the vicinity of chemicals, solvents or hydrocarbons that can change the nature of the rubber.
- Do not store tires in the vicinity of foreign objects that could penetrate into the rubber (metal barbs, wood...).
- Do not store tires in the vicinity of heat sources, open flames, bulbs, ozone sources or materials that could produce sparks or electrical discharges (transformers, electric motors, welders...).
- Do not install damaged tires.
- Strengthened steel wheels are identified by a sticker on the wheel disk.
- On steel and light alloy wheels, the wheel bolts should generally be tightened to the specified tightening torque using a torque wrench.
Model 636, 639
Retighten the wheel bolts after approx. 50 km if new or newly painted rims are used or if new wheel bolts are used.
Model 900, 901, 902, 903, 904, 905, 906, 909
Retighten wheel bolts or wheel nuts after approx. 50 km. If new or newly painted rims are used, the wheel bolts or wheel nuts must also be retightened to the specified tightening torque after 1000 to 5000 km.
- The seat for the tire bead must display no corrosion pits.
- Before inserting a new tire valve clean the contact surfaces on the disk wheel.
The European Union directive stipulates the labeling of tires with regard to fuel efficiency and other essential parameters. Car and commercial vehicle tires as of 01.05.2021 must be marked with a tire label.
The tire label contains information on the following tire parameters:
- Fuel efficiency (1): Fuel efficiency dependent on rolling resistance, graduated into classes from A to E.
- Wet adhesion (2): Wet adhesion assessment, graduated in classes from A to E.
- External rolling noise (3): Rolling noise generated by the tire in dB.
- Grip on snow (4): Ensures compliance with the minimum requirements for winter and all-season tires.
- QR code (5): Detailed information on the tire that the manufacturer has deposited in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) database.
- Manufacturer/tire dimension (6): Manufacturer's name, tire size, load-bearing index, speed rating, tire class.
- Tire type identifier (7): Item number of tire.
