- Check all bearing points of the crankshaft (6) for traces of wear, cross scores, notches, blue coloration and damage.
If damage is present,

Replace the crankshaft (6).
- Check contact surfaces of the crankshafts bearing shells (5) and thrust surfaces of the thrust plates (8) on the crankcase for traces of wear and damage.
If damage is present,

Replace crankshaft and crankcase (6).
- Check the mounting surfaces of the crankshaft bearing shells (4) on the crankshaft bearing caps (1) for traces of wear and damage.
If damage is present,
↓
Replace crankshaft and crankcase (6).
- Inspect the contact surfaces of the crankshaft bearing shells (4) and thrust surfaces of the thrust plates (7) on the crankshaft main bearing cap (2) for signs of wear and damage.
If damage is present,
↓
Replace crankshaft and crankcase (6).
- Measure the basic bore width on the crankshaft main bearing cap (2).
If measured value lies outside of tolerance,
↓
Replace crankshaft and crankcase (6).
- Measure the diameter on the crankshaft pins.
Commercially available devices/tools
Outside micrometer
If the measured value lies outside the tolerance range specified in the "Crankcase check values" table,
↓
Replace the crankshaft (6).
- 7 measure the diameter of the connecting rod journals.
Outside micrometer
If the measured value lies outside the tolerance range specified in the "Crankcase check values" table,
↓
Replace the crankshaft (6).
- Install crankshaft bearing caps (1) without crankshaft bearing shells (4, 5).
- Install the fitted bearing caps (2) without crankcase bearing shells (4, 5) and without thrust plates (7, 8).
- Measure basic bore diameter with a
dial indicator and a rapid measuring gauge for inner measurements in the direction A, B and C in two planes (roundness).
A quick caliper for interior measurements
If the measured values lie outside the tolerance,

Replace crankshaft and crankcase (6).
- Remove crankshaft bearing caps (1) and crankshaft main bearing caps (2).
