Replacing And Installing Brake Pads - AR42.10-P-0170GWV

Model 463 (except 463.234/255/274) 

as of model year 2013 up to model year 2019

CAUTION Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
  Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Open hood   AR88.40-P-1000GG
2 Unscrew cap of brake fluid reservoir and extract some brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the brake fluid reservoir from overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.  
3 Remove wheel-and-tire assembly    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050G
4 Disconnect front brake wear sensor (8) from electrical connection for front brake wear sensor (9)    
5 Pull front brake wear sensor (8) out of holder on spring steel sheet (3)    
6 Carefully pull front brake wear sensor (8) out of brake lining (5) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace the defective or seized front brake wear sensor (8).  
7 Remove screw/bolt (1) and take off support (2) of spring steel sheet (3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt for anti-rattle spring support *BA42.10-P-1006-02B 
8 Place electrical connection for front brake wear sensor (9) to one side    
9 Knock out retaining pins (4) using a drift INSTALLATION IMPORTANT It must be ensured that the retaining pins (4) are seated correctly.
IMPORTANT Replace the retaining pins (4) if necessary
 
10 Remove spring steel sheet (3)    
11 Remove break pads (5) from brake caliper (7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only sets of break pads (5) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed. Do not apply brake paste or lubricants to the break pads (3) and brake calipers (1).  
INSPECT Check     
12 Check that spring steel sheet (3) and support (2) are not damaged and are in good condition If a problem arises

Replace spring steel sheet (3) and/or support (2)
 
13 Check break pads (5) for wear and condition    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   IMPORTANT Replace the brake linings (5) as a complete set only.
In event of damage or excessive wear

Replace break pads (5)

14 Check wear and condition of brake discs (6)    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   IMPORTANT Replace the brake discs (6) as a complete set only.
In event of damage or excessive wear

Replace brake discs (6)

    Model 463 (except 463.234/255/270/271/274)
as of model year 2013 up to model year 2019 brake pads on front axle

    Remove/install brake disc
Model 463.270/271
as of model year 2013 up to model year 2019 brake pads on front axle

15 Check brake caliper (7) and dust boots of brake piston for leaktightness and damage If a problem arises

Replace brake caliper (7)
 
16 Press back brake piston using resetting device IMPORTANT Secure remaining brake pistons using two wedges against slipping out.

With sluggish brake pistons

Replace brake caliper (7)

CLEANING Clean     
17 Clean contact surfaces of brake linings (5) in brake caliper (7) NOTES
While doing so, do not damage the dust boots on the brake piston. Do not use sharp-edged or pointy tools.
Otherwise the brake caliper (2) will be damaged.
 
    Cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1025-04A 
18 Install in the reverse order    
19 Depress brake pedal several times until brake linings (5) make contact with brake discs (6) and a firm resistance is noticeable    
INSPECT Check     
20 Correct fluid level in brake fluid reservoir    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.50-P-4210G
21 Carry out brake test on the test stand
