Function requirements, general
- Circuit 15R On:
The electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) transmits the circuit status of circuit 15 to the front SAM control unit (N10/6) (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or to the SAM control unit (N10) (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the interior CAN (CAN B).
Wiping windshield, general
The windshield wiping function keeps the windshield free of various substances, e.g. water or snow.
The windshield wiper function is comprised of the following subfunctions:
- Intermittent wipe function sequence
- Single wipe function sequence
- Function sequence of wiping at specified speed
- Function sequence for interrupting wiping during engine start
- Wiper start suppression function sequence
- Function sequence for wipe stop (with code FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system) or code FZ8 (Alarm system))
- Function sequence for speed reduction (with code ZU8 (USA national version))
Intermittent wipe function sequence
Intermittent wiping function is activated by turning the combination switch (S4) to switch position "1" (Rain sensor (B38/2b1) in rain and light sensor with additional functions (B38/2) (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342), or rain and light sensor (B38/2) (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342)) (Low sensitivity) or to switch position "2" (High sensitivity).
When the system is switched from switch position "0" to switch position "1" or "2", there is an automatic wipe cycle, the so-called "Reaction wipe".
As of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342:
The steering column tube module control unit (N80) directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and sends it to the front SAM control unit via the chassis FlexRay (Flex E), electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN.
The front SAM control unit transmits the switch position to the rain sensor in the rain and light sensor with additional functions via the rain and light sensor LIN (LIN B16).
The rain sensor in the rain and light sensor calculates the interval speed of the required wiping cycles using the position of the combination switch and the degree of moisture on the windshield and transmits the relevant request back to the front SAM control unit via the rain and light sensor LIN. The front SAM control unit then actuates the wiper motor (M6/1) accordingly.
Up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342:
The steering column tube module control unit directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and transmits this to the SAM control unit via the suspension CAN 1 (CAN E1), electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN.
The SAM control unit transmits the switch position to the rain and light sensor via the roof LIN (LIN B13).
The rain and light sensor calculates the interval speed of the required wiping cycles using the position of the combination switch and the degree of moisture on the windshield and transmits the relevant request back to the SAM control unit via the roof LIN. The SAM control unit then actuates the wiper motor accordingly.
The intermittent wipe function is interrupted under the following conditions:
- Activating wipe/stop function
- Activating wash function
- Activating single wipe function
- Activation of afterwipe function
- Activating wiper startup suppression function
- Turning combination switch to position "0", "3" or "4"
- Blocking wiper motor
- Missing or faulty data, rain sensor in rain and light sensor with additional functions (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342), or rain and light sensor (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342)
Single wipe function sequence
The single wipe function can only be activated if the combination switch is set to position "0", "1" or "2". If the windshield wiper is not located in the rest position, the request of the combination switch is ignored.
The single wipe function is activated by pressing the combination switch up to the detent point.
Wipe once:
To wipe once, briefly push the combination switch to the detent point.
Repeated wiping:
If the combination switch is actuated for a longer period when in position "0", wiping occurs for the duration of time that the switch was actuated, but only for a maximum of t = 30 s.
The steering column tube module control unit directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and transmits this to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342), or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the suspension FlexRay as of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342 or via suspension CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342. The front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) then actuates the wiper motor accordingly.
If the combination switch is held down for longer than t = 30 s when in position "0", the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) classify this as "Defective combination switch" and cancel the single wipe function despite the current request.
The speed at which the windshield wiper is moved during single wipe corresponds to the wiping speed in position "3" (continuous wipe at low speed).
The single wipe function is interrupted under the following conditions:
- Activating wash function
- Activation of afterwipe function
- Activating wipe interruption during engine start function
- Blocking wiper motor
Function sequence of wiping at specified speed
The wipe function with predefined speed is activated by turning the multifunction switch to position "3" (continuous wipe at low speed) or position "4" (continuous wipe at high speed).
The steering column tube module control unit directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and transmits this to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the suspension FlexRay as of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342 or via suspension CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342. The front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) then actuates the wiper motor accordingly.
The wash function with predefined speed is interrupted under the following conditions:
- Activating wipe/stop function
- Activating wash function
- Activation of afterwipe function
- Activation of speed reduction function (except code ZU8 (USA national version))
- Turning the combination switch to position "0", "1", or "2"
- Blocking wiper motor
Function sequence for interrupting wiping during engine start
During engine start, the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) locks operation of the wiper motor.
Any wiping procedure already started is terminated.
The engine start is recognized by the transmission of the status of circuit 50. The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits the circuit status of circuit 50 to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the interior CAN.
Additional function requirements for wiper start suppression
- Vehicle speed v < 3 km/h
- Combination switch in position "1" or "2"
- The rain sensor in the rain and light sensor with additional functions (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or rain and light sensor (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) detects moisture on the windshield
Wiper start suppression function sequence
The wiper start suppression is intended to prevent the driver or front passenger from being sprayed with water from the windshield when getting in or out as the result of an initiated wipe operation.
The wipers remain in the park position despite an actuated manual or automatic wipe request.
If a front door is opened during wiper operation, then the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) interrupts the wiper motor actuation.
The following variables are taken into consideration when doing this:
- Vehicle speed
- Switch position of the combination switch
- Status of the front doors
- Wetting of the windshield
Vehicle speed:
The instrument cluster (A1) transmits information about vehicle speed to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN as of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342 or directly via the interior CAN up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342.
Switch position of the combination switch:
The steering column tube module control unit directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and transmits this to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the suspension FlexRay as of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342 or via suspension CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342.
Status of doors:
The opening of the left front door is recognized by the status of the left front door rotary tumbler switch (A85s1) in the left front door lock (A85). The left front door control unit (N69/1) directly reads in the status of the left front door rotary tumbler switch and sends this to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the interior CAN.
The opening of the right front door is recognized by the status of the right front door rotary tumbler switch (A85/1s1) in the right front door lock (A85/1). The right front door control unit (N69/2) directly reads in the status of the right front door rotary tumbler switch and sends this to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the interior CAN.
Wetting of the windshield:
As of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342, moisture on the windshield is detected by the rain sensor in the rain and light sensor with additional functions. The front SAM control unit reads in the rain and light sensor data via the rain and light sensor LIN.
Up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342, moisture on the windshield is detected by the rain and light sensor. The SAM control unit reads in the data of the rain/light sensor via the roof LIN.
The front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) reads in all of the relevant information, evaluates them and interrupts wiper motor actuation. An already started wiping procedure is not interrupted immediately. The wipers continue to move to the park position.
The wiper start suppression is deactivated under the following circumstances:
- Vehicle speed: v ≥ 3 km/h
- Combination switch in position "3" or "4"
- Single wipe or wash function activated
- Driver and passenger door closed
- Gear range "D" or "R"
- Change from circuit 15C to circuit 15R
With circuit 15R ON, no information about the current gear range is transmitted, and the "N" gear range is transmitted constantly instead. The current gear range is only available as of circuit 15 On.
If circuit 15R is on, cancellation of wiper startup suppression depending on the gear range does not take place.
As of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342, the fully integrated transmission control unit (Y3/8n4) transmits the engaged drive range to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the drive CAN (CAN C1), drivetrain control unit (N127) and suspension FlexRay.
Up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342, the fully integrated transmission control unit sends the engaged drive range to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the drive CAN (CAN C), CDI control unit (N3/9) (engine 642) or ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) (engine 157, 273) and suspension CAN 1.
Up to 02.04.2018, the fully integrated transmission control unit in engine 176 transmits the engaged drive range to the electronic ignition lock control unit via the drive CAN, powertrain control unit and suspension CAN 1.
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends this information to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the interior CAN.
Additional function requirements for wipe stop (with code FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system) or code FZ8 (Alarm system))
- Wipe or wash function activated
Function sequence for wipe stop (with code FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system) or code FZ8 (Alarm system))
The wipe stop function prevents the wiper motor from being actuated with the engine hood open.
If, at a speed of v < 3 km/h, the left hood contact switch (S62/43) detects that the hood is open, then the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342), or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) immediately interrupts wiper motor actuation.
The instrument cluster sends the vehicle speed to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN as of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342 or directly via the interior CAN up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342.
The steering column tube module control unit directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and transmits this to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the suspension FlexRay as of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342 or via suspension CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342.
The front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) directly reads in the status of the left hood contact switch.
The front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) evaluates all of the relevant information and interrupts wiper motor actuation.
The wipe stop function is interrupted at a speed of v > 6 km/h, the wiper motor is actuated once again above this speed.
Additional function requirements for speed reduction (except code ZU8 (USA national version))
- Combination switch in position "3" or "4"
- Vehicle speed reduction of v > 6 km/h to v < 3 km/h
Function sequence for speed reduction (except code ZU8 (USA national version))
It is assumed that the windshield does not become as wet at slow speeds.
For this reason, the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) reduces the wipe speed as soon as deceleration from v > 6 km/h to v < 3 km/h is detected.
The instrument cluster sends the vehicle speed to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN as of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342 or directly via the interior CAN up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342.
The steering column tube module control unit directly reads in the switch position of the combination switch and transmits this to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) via the suspension FlexRay as of 03.04.2018 and except model 463.342 or via suspension CAN 1, the electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN up to 02.04.2018 or for model 463.342.
The front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018, except model 463.342) or the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018 or model 463.342) reads in all of the relevant information, evaluates it and switches the wiper motor's wiper speed back a stage.
The speed reduction is canceled under the following conditions:
- Vehicle speed v > 6 km/h
- Changing wiper speed
- Activating single wipe function
- Activating wash function
