General telematics services function requirements
- Circuit 30
- Transport mode is not active
- Each service is authorized separately
- The HERMES control unit is configured with the telephone number of the corresponding service provider
- The vehicle owner is registered and authorized at the Service Center
General telematics services
At the vehicle side, the telematics services are realized by the HERMES control unit via a cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center. The HERMES control unit sends and receives the mobile phone signals via the emergency call system antenna 1 and the emergency call system antenna 2.
The emergency call system antenna 1 and the emergency call system antenna 2 are used at the same time and form transmission and reception diversity.
For some services, the status of circuit 15 is taken into consideration.
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the signal via the diagnostic CAN to the HERMES control unit.
The telematics services function encompasses the following subfunctions:
- Overview of telematics services
- Voice connection between vehicle and Service Center
- Position finding
- Forwarding of vehicle data, display messages, data queries and operating requests
- Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning
The emergency call, the Internet connection and the transfer of real-time traffic data are described elsewhere.
Overview of telematics services
The following services, e.g. are available:

This service is described in detail at the end of the document.
- Breakdown management:
By pressing the breakdown assistance button, a voice connection to the Service Center is established in order to be able to quickly and effectively initiate help measures in the event of a defect on the vehicle.
- MB-Info:
By pressing the MB-Info button, the user can call up information on products from the Mercedes-Benz brand in addition to other voice-based services (e.g. booking a hotel) over a voice connection.
- Remote closing and opening of the doors:
The HERMES control unit receives the customer request from the Service Center and forwards the request via the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit. The electronic ignition lock control unit checks whether locking or unlocking of all vehicle doors and the liftgate is possible, performs the locking or unlocking (if possible), and reports the locking status back to the HERMES control unit.
- Remote diagnosis:
The transmission of diagnostic data takes place automatically (via scripts, for evaluation) and also manually as part of breakdown assistance. The manual remote diagnosis is triggered by the Service Center and confirmed by the user. As soon as the diagnostic data has been transmitted, the Service Center restores the voice connection to the vehicle.
- Transmission of vehicle position ("Vehicle Locator"):
This service allows the user to determine where the vehicle is currently located. The user receives the vehicle location either in the form of a map display (web page or iPhone), an SMS or by e-mail from the Service Center.
- Notification of a certain speed being exceeded ("Speed Alert"):
As soon as the service is activated, the HERMES control unit reads in the speed value from the diagnostic CAN at intervals of no more than 5 seconds with circuit 15 ON and sends a message to the user if the determined value is exceeded.
- Notification if a certain area has been arrived at or exited ("Geo Fencing"):
The user can determine areas for the vehicle about which, when arrived at or exited, he/she is notified via an SMS, email or automatic phone call.
- Transmission of information (e.g. map data) to the vehicle ("Remote Information Feed"):
Appropriate information is transferred to the vehicle via the Internet (e.g. Google Maps, Yahoo) or the Service Center. With circuit 15 OFF, the HERMES control unit stores the received data in a buffer. If circuit 15 is ON, the HERMES control unit forwards the received data to the COMAND controller unit as soon as it is switched on.
- Transmission of updates to vehicle ("Remote Update"):
The software of the HERMES control unit is updated without the user having to visit a workshop. The software is not updated immediately after being sent, but after a period of 15 minutes after circuit 15 OFF.
- Visual and acoustic vehicle recognition ("Flash Lights and Sound Horn"):
The visual and acoustic vehicle recognition makes it easier to find your own vehicle if it is outside the range of the transmitter key. The message for activating or terminating the panic alarm is forwarded by the HERMES control unit via the diagnostic CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN to the SAM control unit.
Remote Start: Using the cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center, the HERMES control unit also receives the triggering signal for the "Remote Start" function (for pre-entry climate control). The "Remote Start" function starts the engine on a parked and locked vehicle (windows and doors closed), and after a limited period it switches it off again, to enable the "Load Mode" to achieve a pre-entry climate control of the A/C system. The HERMES control unit forwards the triggering signal via the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit.

Voice connection between vehicle and Service Center
The setup of a voice connection to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center is aborted after several unsuccessful dialing attempts, and a corresponding message appears on the Audio/COMAND display.
The voice connection function between the vehicle and the Service Center is split up into the following subfunctions:
- Triggering the voice connection via the breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button
- Mute function
- Hands-free
- Termination of the voice connection
- Prioritization
Triggering the voice connection via the breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button
After the breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button is pressed, the HERMES Control unit establishes a voice connection to the Service Center. The breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button sends the control signal via the following route:

Parallel to the setting up of the voice connection, a data telegram is transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center containing the following data, e. g.: Time stamp, GPS position (global navigation system), language set at the COMAND controller unit, vehicle identification number.
As long as the MB-Info call or the breakdown assistance is activated, the light-emitting diode integrated in the button flashes; for this, the HERMES control unit actuates the breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button in the opposite way. A display also appears on the instrument cluster (via diagnostic CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and chassis CAN 2) and on the Audio/COMAND display (via diagnostic CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit, interior CAN, COMAND controller unit and LVDS line).
The Service Center can perform a remote diagnosis if necessary.
The Service Center can transmit map data to the vehicle if necessary. The data is made available to the navigation module of the COMAND controller unit.
Mute function
When a voice connection is set up, the HERMES control unit sends a signal over a direct line for muting the audio sources (mute function) to the following component, which then actuates the speaker system:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system))
- COMAND controller unit (except EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system))
Hands-free
The hands-free system is not available for telephone calls for the duration of the voice connection.
After a data telegram has been transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center, the user can speak to a service receptionist via the voice connection. The Mercedes-Benz Service Center carries out the call, where possible, in the language that was selected in the system settings of the COMAND controller unit and sent in the data telegram. The HERMES control unit receives the outgoing voice signals from the hands-free system microphone via the COMAND controller unit.
The HERMES control unit outputs the incoming voice signals over the center instrument panel speaker.
The voice output volume can be adjusted using the + and - button, setting of specific functions and the volume control of the right multifunction steering wheel button group. The right multifunction steering wheel button group transmits the volume settings via the following route:

Termination of the voice connection
The voice connection can be terminated via the accept/terminate phone call button of the right multifunction steering wheel button group, if this is not carried out by the Mercedes-Benz Service Center. The right multifunction steering wheel button group sends the control signals via the following route:

Prioritization
For the services that require a voice connection between the vehicle and the Service Center, the prioritization shown below is valid.
Telematics services, e.g. accident management, can also be triggered by the Service Center after an emergency call with the customer's consent. In this case, the voice connection that was set up for the emergency call is used again by means of transferring within the Service Center. The emergency call is then converted into a service with lower priority.

Position finding
A determination of the current vehicle position is essential for many telematics services. The HERMES control unit takes over the position finding signals from the COMAND controller unit. The COMAND controller unit sends the signals over the following path:

Forwarding of vehicle data, display messages, data queries and operating requests
The HERMES control unit forwards the data, data queries and operating requests that have been received via the cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center via diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit, from where they are distributed further according to the respective requests. The HERMES control unit receives the vehicle data via the diagnostic CAN from the electronic ignition lock control unit and forwards this data to the Service Center via the emergency call system antenna 1 and the emergency call system antenna 2 in accordance with requirements.
The content shown on the Audio/COMAND display (e.g. pop-up-window, vehicle positioning symbol) is transmitted by the HERMES control unit via the following route:

Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning
The following points are vehicle tracking objectives:
- Retrieval of stolen or misappropriated vehicles
- Fast assistance if vehicle stolen or in the event of a holdup
The vehicle tracking function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Anti-theft alarm
- Vehicle theft telephone message from vehicle owner to police and then to Service Center
- Vehicle tracking
Additional function requirements for anti-theft alarm
- Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) is active for t>30 s

When the ATA [EDW] is triggered, the SAM control unit sends the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message via the following route:

The "ATA [EDW] alarm" message is transmitted to the Service Center by the HERMES control unit via the emergency call system antenna 1 and the emergency call system antenna 2. The Service Center receives the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message and informs the vehicle owner that the ATA [EDW] alarm has been triggered. Vehicle tracking is not yet triggered by the Service Center.

Vehicle theft telephone message from vehicle owner to police and then to Service Center
If the vehicle owner has been informed by the Service Center that his/her vehicle has been stolen or if the vehicle owner notices himself/herself that the vehicle has been stolen, it is first necessary for the vehicle owner to report the theft to the police. The vehicle owner receives a special number from the police, which confirms that the vehicle theft has been reported.
With this number, the vehicle owner can report to the Service Center, by telephone, and give this number to the employee there. The Service Center checks the request and legitimization (authorization) of the vehicle owner.
Additional function requirement for tracking

Vehicle tracking
After reporting the theft to the Service Center and legitimization (authorization) by the Service Center, an initiation command is transmitted to the vehicle. The initiation command is received by the communications module integrated into the HERMES control unit via the emergency call system antenna 1 and the emergency call system antenna 2. The HERMES control unit then activates position finding and transmits the position data to the service provider via the emergency call system antenna 1 and the emergency call system antenna 2. The Service Center forwards the location of the vehicle to the responsible command staff (e.g. police).
The position data is transmitted cyclically and for the following events:
- Exceeding a certain distance
- Circuit 15 ON or circuit 15 OFF (switching the ignition on or off)
Vehicle tracking can only be deactivated by the Service Center.
