Symbol and ambiance illumination in general
The symbol and ambiance illumination feature provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior.
Symbol and ambiance illumination encompasses the following subfunctions:
- Search and symbol illumination
- Ambiance illumination
Additional function requirements, search and symbol illumination
- Standing lights ON
The SAM control unit sends the status of the standing lights actuation via interior CAN to the instrument cluster.
Search and symbol illumination
In order to control the search and symbol illumination, the instrument cluster reads in the following signals and evaluates them:
- Status of standing lights actuation sent to the interior CAN by the SAM control unit
- Instrument illumination brightness control status (continuous adjustment of switch and controls and symbol illumination brightness)
If the ambient illumination function has been activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the vehicle is unlocked. This causes "Standing lights actuation active" status to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination. If the driver door is then opened, the ambient illumination goes off. "Standing lights actuation active" status is canceled, and the instrument cluster deactivates the search and symbol illumination. The controls in the vehicle are illuminated again only after circuit 15R is then switched on.
The instrument cluster uses the incoming data to generate the circuit 58d signal and transmits it to the actuation for the search and symbol illumination via the interior CAN to the following control units:
- COMAND controller unit (up to model year 2017, as of model year 2017 with code EU4 (COMAND Online))
- SAM control unit
- Automatic air conditioning control and operating unit
- Left front door control unit
- Right front door control unit
- Left rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34)
- Right rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34)
- Electronic ignition switch control unit
The COMAND controller unit (up to model year 2017, as of model year 2017 with code EU4 (COMAND Online)) sends the circuit 58d signal via the telematics CAN to the Audio/COMAND control panel and actuates the switch and controls and symbol illumination of the integrated controls. The Audio/COMAND control panel actuates the switch and controls and symbol illumination of the integrated controls.
The SAM control unit sends the circuit 58d signal to the following components, which then actuate the switch and controls and symbol illumination of the integrated controls:
- Lower control panel control unit (over center console switch LIN)
- Overhead control panel control unit (via roof LIN)
- Upper control panel control unit (via battery sensor LIN)
The SAM control unit actuates the switch and controls and symbol illumination of the following controls:
- Exterior lights switch
- Differential lock button group
- Ashtray illumination
- Front cigarette lighter with ashtray illumination
The overhead control panel control unit actuates the search and symbol illumination of the integrated controls and the following components:
- Ambient lamp
- Dome lamp (model 463.20)
- Rear dome lamp (model 463.23/24/27/34)
The automatic climate control and operating unit actuates the switch and controls and symbol illumination of the integrated controls.
The left front door control unit actuates the switch and controls and symbol illumination of the following components:
- Via left front door LIN:
- Driver-side power window and outside mirror adjustment switch group
- Left front seat adjustment switch group
- direct:
- Left front door handle illumination
- Left front door central locking interior switch
The right front door control unit actuates the switch and controls and symbol illumination of the following components:
- Via right door LIN:
- Right front seat adjustment switch group
- direct:
- Right front door handle illumination
- Passenger-side power window switch
- Right front door central locking interior switch
The left rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34) actuates the switch and controls and symbol illumination of the following components:
- Left rear door handle illumination
- Left rear power window switch
The right rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34) actuates the switch and controls and symbol illumination of the following components:
- Right rear door handle illumination
- Right rear power window switch
The door handle illumination is actuated with a fixed dimming value with circuit 15R ON and implausible circuit 58d signal. The circuit status circuit 15 is transmitted by the electronic ignition lock control unit via the interior CAN to the respective control units.
The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits the circuit 58d signal via chassis CAN 1 to the steering column tube module control unit.
The steering column tube module control unit actuates the switch and controls and symbol illumination of the following components:
- Via steering LIN and steering wheel electronics:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group
- Right multifunction steering wheel button group
Additional function requirements for ambiance illumination
- Circuit 15R ON
- Standing lights ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 status via the interior CAN to the SAM control unit and to the instrument cluster.
Ambiance illumination
The ambiance illumination includes the illumination of the footwells and the trim pieces on the vehicle doors.
To control the ambiance illumination, the instrument cluster reads in and evaluates the following signals:
- Status of circuit 15, sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit over the interior CAN
- Status of standing lights actuation sent to the interior CAN by the SAM control unit
- Instrument illumination brightness control status (continuous adjustment of switch and controls and symbol illumination brightness)
The instrument cluster uses the incoming information to generate the circuit 58d signal and sends it via the interior CAN to the following control units to actuate the ambiance illumination:
- SAM control unit
- Left front door control unit
- Right front door control unit
- Left rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34)
- Right rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34)
The left front door control unit actuates the left front door ambiance illumination.
The right front door control unit actuates the right front door ambiance illumination.
The left rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34) actuates the left rear door ambiance illumination.
The right rear door control unit (model 463.23/24/27/34) actuates the right rear door ambiance illumination.
The SAM control unit actuates the following footwell illumination components in a dimmed state:
- Left front footwell lamp
- Right front footwell lamp
- Left rear footwell lamp
- Right rear footwell lamp
