Mobile telephone system, general
A differentiation is made between the following equipment and utilization variants in the mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony
- Comfort telephony (with code EP3 (Universal Telephony package))
- Telephony through the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) (with code EG1 (Auto telephony))
Telephony via the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) requires comfort telephony. Instead of the universal smartphone cradle, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) is plugged into the mobile phone contact plate.
A mobile phone authorized on the COMAND controller unit can be used as a playback device as part of Bluetooth® audio.
A mobile phone authorized on the COMAND controller unit can also be used as a modem to access the Internet.
The COMAND controller unit transmits and receives telephone signals via the Bluetooth® antenna. The COMAND controller unit generates the displays messages and transmits them to the Audio/COMAND display via an LVDS line.
The mobile phone system is described here using basic telephony as an example. The special features of comfort telephony and telephony via the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) are summarized at the end of this document.

Bluetooth®
Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to quickly and easily connect mobile terminals that support the corresponding profiles to the mobile phone system. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The extremely high level of data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of this type of Bluetooth® network are what makes the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting. The COMAND controller unit can integrate mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via the mobile phone Bluetooth® interface and the Bluetooth® antenna. The COMAND controller unit automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone that responds first.
If the mobile phone is not automatically connected to the COMAND controller unit or if the COMAND controller unit is to establish a connection to another mobile phone, then the connection must be made manually via the telephone base function. Authorized telephones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized telephones must be authorized first. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized at the same time. When authorizing a new telephone if 15 telephones are already authorized, the user is prompted to first delete one of the existing data records. Detailed information on authorization is available in the respective operator's manual.
If a smartphone is connected to the multimedia connection unit through Android Auto, then only this smartphone can be used for making telephone calls.
Switch on/off characteristics
The mobile phone is switched ON/OFF via the mobile phone itself. The Personal Identification Number (PIN) must then, where set, be entered in the mobile phone. If the subscriber identification module (SIM) has been authorized, the mobile phone registers with the mobile phone network of the respective provider. The mobile phone network provider and signal level are displayed in the status bar of the Audio/COMAND display. The Bluetooth® setting must be enabled in the mobile phone.
If the mobile phone was manually or automatically switched OFF or if the Bluetooth® setting is switched OFF, the message "Ready for Bluetooth® Telephony" is displayed in the Audio/COMAND display. The COMAND controller unit then searches again for the last authorized mobile phones.
Call signal
The COMAND controller unit receives the call signal from the mobile phone via the Bluetooth® antenna. The COMAND controller unit sends the call tone via direct lines to the speaker system or, on vehicles with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system), via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system. If the mobile phone supports "In-band ringing", the mobile phone ring tone is emitted over the speakers, otherwise the default ring tone of the COMAND controller unit is used.
The COMAND controller unit mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. with radio mode) (mute function) and displays the caller ID over the LVDS line on the Audio/COMAND display.
Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call
Telephone numbers can be entered using a character bar on the Audio/COMAND display or they can be searched for and selected in call lists or in the address book. The mobile phone system can be operated using the following components:
- Mobile phone
- Buttons on the COMAND controller unit
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
Toggle: If during a telephone call another incoming call is received or another telephone connection is set up, then the new call is activated and the existing one put on hold. It is then possible to switch (toggle) between the active call and the one on hold.
Conference connection: If the mobile phone supports the function, it is possible - after several calls have been connected - to switch, not only between the calls, as for toggling, but to have all the calls active at the same time in a conference connection.
Mobile phone
Mobile phone operations are processed internally, and status changes are received by the COMAND controller unit via the Bluetooth® antenna.
Buttons on the COMAND controller unit
The control signals are processed internally in the COMAND controller unit.
Audio/COMAND control panel
The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
Multifunction steering wheel button groups
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded by the steering wheel electronics via the following route:

Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
The VCS is activated on the left multifunction steering wheel button group. When a call is being established or a call is being accepted, the VCS is automatically switched off.

COMAND control unit
When the voice control system is active, the voice commands are picked up by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit. The COMAND controller unit transmits the control signals to the mobile phone via the Bluetooth® antenna, if necessary.
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
Using the phone in hands-free mode
The voice input in hands-free mode is picked up by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit. The COMAND controller unit transmits the signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone. The COMAND controller unit receives the incoming voice signals via the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone and outputs them via the speaker system. In vehicles with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system) the COMAND controller unit forwards the incoming voice signals, including the audio parameters (e.g. volume) over MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.
The volume of the voice output can be adjusted e.g. using the COMAND controller unit or the right multifunction steering wheel button group. The control signal of the right multifunction steering wheel button group is forwarded by the steering wheel electronics via the following route:

Phone book
The telephone book contains the telephone entries stored in the COMAND controller unit. The user can manage (view and delete) his contact data in the telephone book. The system can be provided with the stored information via the phone book entries and the connection established immediately.
Read access to the phone book of the mobile phone is provided if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP). Otherwise, data can only be loaded from the telephone book of the mobile phone onto the COMAND controller unit as "vcards".
Address book
Users can manage their contact data in the address book. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries.
Address data from external devices,(e.g. PDA or notebook) or storage media (e.g. SD card or universal serial bus (USB) stick)) can be stored in the address book and are then permanently available as an address entry. The address data can be sent to the address book via the following system components:
- Bluetooth® interface of mobile phone and the Bluetooth® antenna
- SD card slot of COMAND controller unit
- Multimedia connection unit
Address data that is transmitted via Bluetooth® is received by the COMAND controller unit from the Bluetooth® antenna. Address data from the multimedia connection unit is received by the COMAND controller unit via a direct line.
Address book entries can contain the following information among other things:
- Last name, first name and company
- "Yomigana field" (for phonetic entry of the name in "Katakana" syllabary) (with code ZJ1 (Version for Japan))
The call can be established via the voice control system for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field".
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (several telephone numbers can be saved under one address entry with different symbols)
- Geo position
Speed-dial list
The speed dial list consists of up to ten telephone numbers to which phone book entries can be assigned with digits from 0 to 9. The call list and speed dial list menu entries enable the user to manage the entries. The speed dial list is active only when the "Telephone" menu is active.
"Seamless switch"
"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:
- An existing telephone conversation can be continued in hands-free mode (e.g. when getting into the vehicle) if the COMAND controller unit is switched on and "Private Mode" is not activated on the mobile phone.
- If the COMAND controller unit is switched off during a telephone call, the call is transferred to the mobile phone and can be continued from there.
The "Seamless Switch" function is not possible for telephony over the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP).
With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.
Short message service (SMS) (except code ZJ1 (Version for Japan))
The SMS application allows the user to receive, transmit and manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the received SMS messages already stored on the mobile phone as well as all new incoming SMS messages are forwarded to the COMAND controller unit. The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receive SMS
- Read SMS via the display of the mobile phone and via the Audio/COMAND display
- Read SMS (English or German)
- Write and send SMS
- Delete SMS
- Mail inbox list of the 30 most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either the sender or the start of the text for each SMS)
The SMS function with basic telephony requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported. Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.
As soon as the COMAND controller unit is connected to the mobile phone, it receives the SMS messages that are already stored in the mobile phone and any new incoming SMS messages via the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone. The functions for writing, sending and managing SMS messages are activated through the basic telephone function. The COMAND controller unit displays the SMS messages on the Audio/COMAND Display via the LVDS line. When reading the SMS message aloud, the COMAND controller unit sends the audio signals either straight to the speaker system or, in vehicles with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system), via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit.
Additional function requirements for convenience telephony (with code EP3 (Universal Telephony package)) and telephony via the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) (with code EG1 (Car telephony))
- Telephony with code EG1 (Auto telephony): No smartphone connected over Android Auto to multimedia connection unit
Comfort telephony (with code EP3 (Universal Telephony package)) and telephony over the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) (with code EG1 (Auto telephony))
The mobile phone signals are sent and received via the multifunction antenna. The connection is established via the mobile phone contact plate in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) between the front seats. In vehicles with code EP3 (Universal Telephony package) the universal smartphone cradle is plugged onto the mobile phone contact plate and the corresponding mobile phone is then inserted into the universal smartphone cradle. In vehicles with code EG1 (Auto telephony), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) is plugged onto the mobile phone contact plate.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) supports the SIM Access Profile (SAP).
Comfort telephony and telephony with code EG1 (Auto telephony) exhibit the following special features:

Mobile phone contact plate functions
The mobile phone contact plate fulfills the following functions:
- Mobile phone or telephone module connection with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) to multifunction antenna
- Forwarding of the wake-up signal from the COMAND controller unit
- Power supply for the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)
The connection to the COMAND controller unit is made via the mobile phone (via Bluetooth®) or via the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP).
When using the universal smartphone cradle, the mobile phone is not charged via the contact plate. For charging purposes, the mobile phone must also be connected to the multimedia connection unit via a charging cable that is included in the scope of supply.

In vehicles with code EP3 (Universal Telephony package) the telephone signals are forwarded over the following path by the mobile phone contact plate:

COMAND control unit
In vehicles with code EG1 (Auto telephony) the mobile phone contact plate forwards the telephone signals to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP). The telephone signals can be forwarded by the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) to the COMAND controller unit via two different routes:
- If the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) forwards the mobile phone signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the COMAND controller unit, the data rate is restricted by the Bluetooth® connection.
- If the full data rate is to be used, which makes sense especially for using the Internet, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) must be connected to the multimedia connection unit via the integrated USB connector at the rear of the device and the enclosed cable. Both USB connector 1 and USB connector 2 of the multimedia connection unit can be used for connecting. The multimedia connection unit forwards the incoming telephone signals to the COMAND controller unit and the outgoing telephone signals from the COMAND controller unit to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP).
Switch-on characteristics
The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse from the COMAND controller unit when the COMAND controller unit is switched on. The COMAND controller unit transmits the signal to the mobile phone contact plate via a direct line. The mobile phone contact plate forwards the signal with code EG1 (Auto telephony) to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) and with code EP3 (Universal Telephony package) over the universal smartphone cradle to the mobile phone.
PIN prompt
A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the mobile phone is configured for this. The PIN prompt is shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the COMAND controller unit via an LVDS line. The PIN can be entered using the controls for the COMAND controller unit. For the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) (with code EG1 (Auto telephony)) the PIN of a connected telephone or the SIM card can be stored, so that it does not have to be entered again when switched on.
Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) (with code EG1 (Auto telephony))
- Before the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be used in the vehicle it must be authorized. For authorization, press the button with the LED on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) to put it into pairing mode and then select "Pair MB SAP module" in the telephone menu. After this the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is connected to the vehicle.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be used in two different ways to make a call:
- With an inserted SIM card, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is a fully-functional communication module.
- Without a SIM card the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can use the SIM card of another mobile phone in the vehicle. The required SIM card data is transmitted via Bluetooth® to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).
Mobile phones that are to be used for telephony with the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) must support SAP and be connected once (authorized) to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized. After switching on the COMAND controller unit, an automatic search is performed for the last two SAP telephones to be used in the vehicle and the first one to respond to the prompt is connected, provided that the following conditions are met:
- The mobile phone is not connected via Bluetooth® to any other device.
- There is no SIM card in the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).
If another mobile phone is to be connected, then the connection has to be interrupted first and then the corresponding mobile phone manually connected by selecting it from a list of SAP telephones.
If necessary, the mobile phone can be charged using a USB connector at top beneath the cover on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP). The USB connector on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) can also be used for a software update e.g. with a USB memory (USB stick). The update files and the procedure are made available to the customer on the Internet.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is Internet capable when the mobile phone contract includes a data option.
A ring tone can be selected for the respective SIM card or SAP telephone from a list of ring tones.
SMS (with code EG1 (Auto telephony))
State of the art mobile phones come with two memories for SMS messages: one on the telephone and one on the SIM card. As long as the mobile phone is used for telephony with code EG1 (Auto telephony), incoming SMS messages in the mobile phone can only be stored on the SIM card. Storing incoming SMS messages on the SIM card can lead to the following problems:
- SMS messages that have been received while the mobile phone was connected to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) are frequently not displayed in the mobile phone's SMS input.
- The memory on the SIM card is limited. Incoming SMS messages cannot be stored and displayed when the memory is full.
