Function requirements for mobile phone system, general 

Mobile telephone system, general 

The functional scope of the mobile phone system is not only dependent on the vehicle equipment, but also on the mobile phone used and the settings on the mobile phone.

A distinction is made between the following 3 versions for the mobile phone system:

All variants use Bluetooth® technology for data transfer.

With basic telephony, the mobile phone is connected to the COMAND controller unit via Bluetooth®. The mobile phone can be operated with the control components of the vehicle and the vehicle's hands-free system can be used. If the mobile phone and the COMAND controller unit support Internet access, the telephone connection is Internet-capable.

With comfort telephony (with code EH2 (Comfort telephony)), the connection to the mobile telephone network is also established via the multifunction antenna (except model 463.202) or the telephone, radio and stationary heater antenna (on model 463.202) of the vehicle and the mobile phone is charged.

The telephony with code EH4 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)) requires equipment with code EH2 (Comfort telephony). Instead of the mobile phone cradle (accessories), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) can be plugged onto the mobile phone contact plate (as of 02.09.2013) or the Bluetooth® module (up to 30.08.2013). The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) uses the multifunction antenna (except model 463.202) or the telephone, radio and stationary heater antenna (model 463.202) for access to the mobile telephone network. The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is Internet capable. This property can be used if the mobile phone contract includes a data option.

Since the mobile phone during telephony with code EH4 (Telephone module with Bluetooth (SAP)) is in a condition that is comparable to standby or flight mode, the mobile phone's rechargeable battery is only used to a small extent. If necessary, a charging cable for the mobile phone can be connected to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can also be operated without a mobile phone, with only a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card.

IMPORTANT To ensure that a mobile phone with Bluetooth capability that is also authorized at the COMAND controller unit can be used in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support the Hands Free Profile (HFP) 1.0 or higher.

IMPORTANT A mobile phone authorized at the COMAND controller unit can also be used as a modem for accessing the Internet or as a playback device as part of Bluetooth® Audio. These functions are described elsewhere.

IMPORTANT The mobile phone system is described here using basic telephony as an example. The special features of comfort telephony and telephony via the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) are summarized at the end of this document.

The mobile phone system includes the following areas:

Bluetooth® 

Modern communication devices can quickly and easily be connected to the mobile phone system via Bluetooth®. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range.

One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The extremely high data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of this type of Bluetooth® network are what makes the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting.

The COMAND controller unit can integrate mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via the mobile phone Bluetooth® interface and the Bluetooth® antenna. The COMAND controller unit automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone that responds first.

With code EH4 (Telephone module with Bluetooth (SAP)), a search is initially made for the two SIM Access Profiles (SAP) telephones last connected. With code EH2 (Comfort telephony) except code EH4 (Telephone module with Bluetooth (SAP) up to 30.08.2013), a search is initially made for a mobile phone inserted in the mobile phone cradle (accessories).

If the mobile phone is not automatically connected to the COMAND controller unit or if the COMAND controller unit is to establish a connection to another mobile phone, then the connection must be made manually via the telephone base function. Authorized telephones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized telephones must be authorized first. SAP telephones (with code EH4 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP))) are listed in a separate list. Up to 15 mobile phones and up to 15 SAP telephones can be authorized at the same time. If more telephones are authorized, the oldest data records in each case will be overwritten. Detailed information on authorization is available in the respective operator's manual.

Switch on/off characteristics 

A mobile phone operated via Bluetooth® is switched on and off on the mobile phone itself. A mobile phone operated with Bluetooth® processes the switch-on signal internally in the mobile phone. If configured on the mobile phone and the phone transmits the status, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) prompt only appears on the mobile phone display. PIN entry is made on the mobile phone only. The reception status is received by the mobile phone's antenna.

After logging into the provider's mobile telephone network, a display appears on the mobile phone display and the Audio/COMAND display. The mobile phone's switch-off signal is processed internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. This process also runs internally in the mobile phone.

Call signal 

The COMAND controller unit receives the call signal from the mobile phone via the Bluetooth® antenna.

The COMAND controller unit sends the call tone via direct lines to the speaker system or, on vehicles with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system), via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.

IMPORTANT If the mobile phone supports "In-band ringing", the mobile phone ringing is emitted over the vehicle speakers, otherwise the COMAND controller unit's default ringing sound is used.

The COMAND controller unit mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. with radio mode) (mute function). The call identification is sent by the COMAND controller unit via an LVDS line and shown on the Audio/COMAND display.

IMPORTANT When "Tel" has been selected on the instrument cluster, the call recognition is indicated on the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives the signals via the interior CAN from the COMAND controller unit.

Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call 

The function can be carried out using the following components:

If the mobile phone is not operated directly, the COMAND controller unit transmits the control signals via Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone. The COMAND controller unit generates the displays corresponding to the control procedures and sends them via LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display.

IMPORTANT Toggle: Calls incoming during a call are shown on the Audio/COMAND display (call waiting). The toggle function enables a change to be made between the calls shown on the Audio/COMAND display. Voice communication only exists for the respective active telephone connection, while other connections are put on hold. The toggling function is dependent on it being supported by the mobile phone. If the mobile phone does not support toggling, when another call is accepted the call active up until then is then terminated.

Mobile phone 

Operation of the mobile phone is processed internally and not forwarded to the COMAND controller unit.

Phone buttons or keypad on the COMAND controller unit 

The control signals from the telephone buttons or the keypad on the COMAND controller unit are processed internally.

The buttons on the COMAND controller unit provide the following control options, for example:

Audio/COMAND control panel 

The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are sent via telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

The following options are available to the user for dialing a telephone number, for example:

By selecting the corresponding operating panels on the Audio/COMAND display, calls can be accepted or rejected and it is possible to switch between various calls (toggle).

Multifunction steering wheel button groups 

The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the COMAND controller unit in the following manner:

A call can be established or terminated in the following manner, for example:

Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) 

If the VCS [SBS] is activated, a call can be established or accepted via the VCS [SBS].

The hands-free system microphone records the voice input (voice commands) and forwards this via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit.

The voice output of the VCS [SBS] is sent by the COMAND controller unit to the speaker system (except code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system)). On vehicles with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system), the COMAND controller unit sends the voice output via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which outputs the signals over the speaker system.

The COMAND controller unit converts the voice commands into control signals. Possible voice commands are, for example:

IMPORTANT The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".

Using the phone in hands-free mode 

The voice input for the outgoing telephone signals is picked up by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit. The COMAND controller unit transmits the signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone.

The COMAND controller unit receives the incoming voice signals via the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone and outputs them over the speaker system (except code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system)).

On vehicles with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system), the COMAND controller unit sends the incoming voice signals via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system.

Phone book 

The telephone book contains the telephone entries stored in the COMAND controller unit. The user can manage (view and delete) his contact data in the telephone book.

The system can be provided with the stored information via the phone book entries and the connection established immediately.

The phone book is called up in the basic "Telephone" function via the "Name" menu item in the application field.

IMPORTANT The phone book for the mobile phone is downloaded in the background or updated in the COMAND controller unit's phone book if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP). Otherwise phone book entries from the mobile phone can be loaded as "vCards" via Bluetooth® or via the USB electrical connector on the COMAND controller unit.

Address book 

The address book contains the address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries. The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create).

Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book.

Address entries can also be transferred from other external devices or data media to the address book as "vCards". "vCards" can be transferred into the address book as follows, for example:

Address entries can contain the following:

The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field" (with code ZJ1 (Version for Japan)).

Read access is available to the phone book of the mobile phone when the mobile phone supports the PBAP profile.

Speed-dial list 

The speed dial list consists of up to ten telephone numbers to which phone book entries can be assigned with digits from 0 to 9. The user can manage the entries using the "Call lists" and "Speed dial list" menu entries.

The speed dial list is active only when the "Telephone" menu is active. Pressing the number on the keypad of the COMAND controller unit for a longer period of time (approx. 2 s) dials up the telephone number stored and establishes a connection.

"Seamless switch" 

"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:

IMPORTANT When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation.

IMPORTANT With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.

Short message service (SMS) function (except code ZJ1 (Version for Japan)) 

The SMS application enables the user to manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the received SMS messages already stored on the mobile phone as well as all new incoming SMS messages are forwarded to the COMAND controller unit. The following SMS functions are possible:

IMPORTANT The SMS function with basic telephony requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported.

The SMS function comprises the following subfunctions:

Load existing SMS messages in the COMAND controller unit 

The mobile phone sends the SMS messages already stored on the mobile phone via the Bluetooth® antenna to the COMAND controller unit.

IMPORTANT Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.

Receive SMS 

The mobile phone sends the newly received SMS messages via the Bluetooth® antenna to the COMAND controller unit.

Call up the SMS application 

The SMS function for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) SMS messages is called up using the basic "Telephone" function via the "SMS" submenu in the function bar.

The control signals of the "TEL" button are processed internally by the COMAND controller unit.

The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

The Audio/COMAND display is actuated by the COMAND controller unit via LVDS line.

Display SMS message 

The SMS content is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display. To do this, the COMAND controller unit actuates the Audio/COMAND display via LVDS line.

Read out SMS message 

SMS voice output is conducted via the vehicle speaker system.

Additional function requirements for Mercedes-Benz Contact (except code ZU8 (USA national version) or code ZJ1 (Version for Japan)) 

Mercedes-Benz Contact (except code ZU8 (USA national version) or code ZJ1 (Version for Japan)) 

The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function provides user-friendly access to the services rendered by Mercedes-Benz Services by means of a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the COMAND controller unit or the telephone book of the mobile phone. The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function uses the hands-free system (via Bluetooth®) and supports the service acceptance process at the Service Center by voice communication with synchronous transfer of the vehicle data.

The fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the COMAND controller unit or in the telephone book of the mobile phone is selected via one of the following components:

After an active call has been established to the Service Center, the user starts the data transfer. The data is transferred after an active telephone call is set up by actuating a number key on the keypad of the COMAND controller unit.

For data transfer purposes, the COMAND controller unit retrieves the kilometer reading and the maintenance computer information via interior CAN on the instrument cluster and the map data from the navigation module integrated into the COMAND controller unit.

The data is transmitted by the COMAND controller unit by means of Dual sound Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tones to the service center in the same way as when the call has been established successfully.

After the data has been transferred to the Service Center, the user can talk to an employee at the Service Center or the workshop. The transmitted data is then available to the employee.

Comfort telephony (with code EH2 (Comfort telephony), except code EH4 (Telephone module with Bluetooth (SAP))) 

The mobile phone signals are sent and received over the multifunction antenna (except model 463.202) or over the telephone, radio and stationary heater antenna (model 463.202).

As of 02.09.2013, a connection is established through the mobile phone contact plate in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) underneath the armrest.

Up to 30.08.2013, the connection is established over the Bluetooth® module in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) underneath the armrest.

A corresponding mobile phone cradle (accessories) is plugged into the mobile phone contact plate or the Bluetooth® module and the respective mobile phone is then inserted into the mobile phone cradle.

Comfort telephony exhibits the following special features:

Switch-on characteristics 

The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse from the COMAND controller unit when the COMAND controller unit is switched on. The switch-on signal is transmitted via the following route from the COMAND controller unit via the mobile phone contact plate (as of 02.09.2013) or the Bluetooth® module (up to 30.08.2013) and the mobile phone cradle (accessories) to the mobile phone.

IMPORTANT Not all mobile phone cradles support this switch on/off feature.

Personal Identification Number (PIN) query 

A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the mobile phone is configured for this. The PIN prompt is shown by the COMAND controller unit via the LVDS line on the Audio/COMAND display as well as via interior CAN in the instrument cluster. The PIN can be entered on the COMAND controller unit.

The mobile phone contact plate or the Bluetooth® module forwards the mobile phone signals over the mobile phone cradle (accessories) to the mobile phone.

As of 02.09.2013, the mobile phone sends the mobile phone signals as Bluetooth® signals to the Bluetooth® antenna. The Bluetooth® antenna forwards the signals to the COMAND controller unit.

Up to 30.08.2013, the Bluetooth® module transmits the mobile phone signals as Bluetooth® signals to the Bluetooth® antenna. The Bluetooth® antenna forwards the signals to the COMAND controller unit.

Telephony with code EH4 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)) 

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be used in two different ways to make a call:

The connection is established via the mobile phone contact plate (as of 02.09.2013) or via the Bluetooth® module (up to 30.08.2013) in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) underneath the armrest. The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is plugged into the mobile phone contact plate or the Bluetooth® module.

IMPORTANT The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) can be released with the aid of a button and removed from the mobile phone contact plate or from the Bluetooth® module. The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) supports the SIM Access Profile (SAP).

IMPORTANT Under "Options", a ring tone can be selected for the respective SIM card or SAP telephone from a list of ring tones.

IMPORTANT The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) can also be used as a modem for the Internet if the COMAND controller unit supports the function and the mobile phone contract includes a data option.

Telephony with code EH4 (Telephone module with Bluetooth (SAP)) has the following special considerations:

Authorize telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) 

Switch-on characteristics 

The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse from the COMAND controller unit when the COMAND controller unit is switched on. The COMAND controller unit transmits the signal over the mobile phone contact plate (as of 02.09.2013) or the Bluetooth® module (up to 30.08.2013) to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP).

PIN prompt 

A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the SAP telephone is configured for this. The PIN prompt is shown by the COMAND controller unit via an LVDS line on the Audio/COMAND display as well as via interior CAN in the instrument cluster. The PIN can be entered on the COMAND controller unit.

The PIN of the SAP telephone or the SIM card can be stored so that it does not need to be entered again when switched on.

Connect SAP telephone 

SAP telephones must support the SIM Access Profile and be connected (authorized) once with the telephone module using Bluetooth® (SAP profile). Up to 15 SAP telephones can be authorized at the same time.

After switching on the COMAND controller unit, an automatic search is performed for the last two SAP telephones used in the vehicle and the first one that responds is connected.

SAP telephones can only be automatically connected if the following requirements are met:

If another SAP telephone is to be connected, then the connection has to be interrupted first and then the corresponding SAP telephone manually connected by selecting it from the list of SAP telephones.

Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) routes the mobile phone signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the COMAND controller unit.

SMS 

During telephony with the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile), it is not only possible to receive SMS messages, but also to send them. If the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is connected to an SAP telephone, this must support the message access profile (MAP).

State of the art mobile phones come with two memories for SMS messages: one on the telephone and one on the SIM card. As long as the mobile phone is used for telephony with code EH4 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)), incoming SMS messages on the mobile phone can only be stored on the SIM card.

Storing incoming SMS messages on the SIM card can lead to the following problems:

Software update 

The USB connector on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) can also be used for software updates, e.g. with a USB memory (USB stick). The update files and the procedure are made available to the customer on the Internet.
