Manual interior lights control in general
The manual interior lights control function encompasses the following subfunctions:
- Interior illumination
- Load compartment illumination
- Reading lights
- Actuation of sun visor mirror lamps (except model 463.342)
- Glove compartment illumination

When the stealth lamps actuation is active, the interior illumination is not switched on or is switched off.
Interior illumination
Model 463 (except model 463.342) as of 03.04.2018:
The overhead control panel control unit directly reads in the status of the dome lamp buttons and sends it via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.
The following components of the interior illumination are switched on or off manually by operating the front dome lamp button:
- Front dome lamp
- Left reading lamp in inside rearview mirror (actuation over roof LIN)
- Right reading lamp in inside rearview mirror (actuation over roof LIN)
The following components of the interior illumination are switched on or off manually by operating the rear dome lamp button:
- Left rear interior lamp
- Right rear interior lamp
The interior lighting in the rear passenger compartment can also be switched on or off by voice control. The driver hands-free system microphone is directly read in by the head unit for this purpose. The head unit processes the speech signals and transmits the operation signals via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

The front SAM control unit also sends the request to switch on the footwell lamps over the interior CAN to the ambient lighting control unit.
The ambient lighting control unit then actuates the following component parts:
Over cockpit ambient lighting LIN:
- Right front footwell lamp
- Left front footwell lamp
Over the ambient lighting LIN in the rear footwell:
- Right rear footwell lamp
- Left rear footwell lamp
If the automatic interior lights control is activated after opening a door, it can be switched off manually using the respective reading lamp button. The respective area is then switched off completely.
Model 463 (except model 463.342) up to 02.04.2018, model 463.342 except code ZD4 (Vehicle for non-civilian use) or with code ZD4 (Vehicle for non-civilian use) and except code E11 (Stealth light with convoy marking):
Operate the interior lamp automatic door system switch to switch the interior illumination on or off. The overhead control panel control unit directly reads in the status of the interior lamp automatic door system switch and sends this via the roof LIN to the SAM control unit. The SAM control unit receives the status of the interior lamp automatic door system switch and sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via the roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.
The following components of the interior illumination are actuated by the overhead control panel control unit:
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp (model 463.23/24/27/34)
- Dome lamp (model 463.20)
Model 463.342 with code E11 (Stealth lights with convoy marking) and code F16 (Electric sliding roof with tilt function):
Operate the interior lamp automatic door system switch to switch the interior illumination on or off. The overhead control panel control unit directly reads in the status of the interior lamp automatic door system switch and sends this via the stealth lights LIN, stealth lights control unit and roof LIN to the SAM control unit. The SAM control unit receives the status of the interior lamp automatic door system switch and sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via the roof LIN, stealth lights control unit and stealth lights LIN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.
The following components of the interior illumination are actuated by the overhead control panel control unit:
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp
Model 463.342 with E11 (Stealth lights with convoy marking) and except code F16 (Electric sliding roof with tilt function):
Press the front interior lamp switch to switch through the applied voltage to the front interior lamp and rear interior lamp.
The SAM control unit also actuates the following footwell illumination components with a brightness value that corresponds to 100 %:
- Right front footwell lamp
- Left front footwell lamp
Additional load compartment illumination function requirements
- Vehicle stationary
- Automatic door function switched off (up to 02.04.2018)

A stationary vehicle is defined via the vehicle speed. The instrument cluster (A1) sends the vehicle speed to the front SAM control unit over the user interface CAN (CAN HMI), electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN.

The instrument cluster sends information on the vehicle speed via the interior CAN to the SAM control unit.

The instrument cluster sends information on vehicle speed via the instrument cluster CAN (CAN IC), stealth lights control unit and interior CAN to the SAM control unit.
Load compartment illumination
The load compartment illumination is activated by opening the rear-end door.
Vehicles as of 03.04.2018 except model 463.342:
The status of the rear-end door is sent by the rear SAM control unit over the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit then sends the request to switch on the load compartment lighting over the interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit.
The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Left load compartment lamp
- Right load compartment lamp
Vehicles up to 02.04.2018 and model 463.342:
The SAM control unit evaluates the following signals to control the load compartment illumination:
- Status of automatic door system
- Vehicle speed, sent by instrument cluster via interior CAN
- Rear-end door status sent by rear SAM control unit via interior CAN
The SAM control unit actuates the following components of the load compartment illumination:
- Left load compartment lamp
- Right load compartment lamp
The SAM control unit also activates the orientation lighting, while the footwell lamps remain switched off.
After closing the rear-end door, all switched-on lights are switched off.
To preserve the on-board electrical system battery, all the lights that are switched on are switched off after 5 min. with the rear-end door open and circuit 15 OFF.
Reading lights
The reading illumination serves to illuminate a defined area in front of the user, without having a distracting dazzling effect on the driver.
Model 463 (except model 463.342) as of 03.04.2018:
The overhead control panel control unit reads in the status of the relevant reading lamp button directly and transmits this via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the reading illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.
The following reading lamp components can be switched on or off manually by pressing the relevant reading lamp button:
- Left reading lamp through left front reading lamp button
- Right reading lamp through right front reading lamp button
- Left rear reading lamp over the left rear reading lamp button
- Right rear reading lamp via the right rear reading lamp button
The left reading lamp and the right reading lamp can also be switched on or off using the voice control. The driver hands-free system microphone is directly read in by the head unit for this purpose. Press the reading lamp switch to switch the reading lights on or off for the driver or front passenger. The overhead control panel control unit directly reads in the status of the reading lamp switch and sends it via the roof LIN to the SAM control unit. The SAM control unit receives the status of the reading lights switch and sends the request to switch on the reading illumination via the roof LIN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.
The following components of the reading lights are actuated by the overhead control panel control unit:
- Left reading lamp
- Right reading lamp
Model 463.23/24/27/34 up to 02.04.2018:
Press the left rear reading lamp switch in the rear dome lamp to switch the left rear reading lamp on or off.
Press the right rear reading lamp switch in the rear dome lamp to switch the right rear reading lamp on or off.
Voltage applied to the rear reading lamp switches is then switched through to the respective rear reading lamp.
Actuation of sun visor mirror lamps (except model 463.342)
The following component parts can be switched on or off by opening or closing the mirror cover in the sun visor:
- Left sun visor mirror lamp via the left front mirror lamp switch
- Right sun visor mirror lamp over the right front mirror lamp switch
Voltage applied to the mirror lamp switches is then switched through to the respective sun visor mirror lamp.
The power supply for the left sun visor mirror lamp and the right sun visor mirror lamp is switched off when the vehicle is locked.
To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), the power supply is switched off 30 min. after circuit 15 OFF.
Additional function requirements for glove compartment illumination
- Circuit 15R ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 over the interior CAN to the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018) or to the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018).
Glove compartment illumination
The glove compartment lamp switch is powered by the SAM control unit (up to 02.04.2018) or by the front SAM control unit (as of 03.04.2018). Voltage is switched through to the glove compartment lamp by opening the glove compartment door.
As of 03.04.2018, after circuit 15C is switched off the glove compartment lamp is switched off after 40 s.
