Instrument cluster, general
The instrument cluster notifies the driver of all dynamic and static driving conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle.
In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.
The following displays are incorporated in the instrument cluster in order to be able to convey information to the driver:
- Permanent displays (e.g. vehicle speed, rotational speed, tank contents)
- Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signals, high beams)
- Warning lamps (red) (e.g. coolant level, brake fluid level)
- Multifunction display (e.g. outside temperature indicator, travel distance display)
As of 03 04 2018 (except Model 463 342):
The instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group can be used to navigate within the operating menus (e.g. Workshop, Service, Trip, Media) in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster and to change to sub-menus:
- The "Back" button can be used to jump back from the menu or sub-menu to the next higher menu level. A long press of the "Home" and "Back" button enables you to jump to the main menu.
- The finger navigation pad on the instrument cluster can be used to navigate in menus (right/left) or lists (up/down). By pressing the instrument cluster finger navigation pad, the respective selection or pending messages can be confirmed. Acoustic feedback is issued when operating the instrument cluster finger navigation pad.
Up to 02 04 2018 or for Model 463 342:
The left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right
multifunction steering wheel button group can be used to display
various menu levels in the multifunction display of the instrument
cluster:
- It is possible to scroll in the main menu using the system selection button.
- It is possible to scroll within a menu in the sub-menus or in lists using the scroll forward and back button.
- The "Back" and voice control system off button can be used in each menu or sub-menu to jump into the next higher menu level.
- The OK button can be used to confirm the respective selection or pending messages.
The instrument cluster makes the following functions possible:

Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
For the following events the background illumination of the multifunction display in the instrument cluster is activated:
- Unlocking vehicle using radio or also infrared up to production date August 31st, 2015
- Opening or closing driver door
The following events activate the background illumination of the multifunction display and the scale illumination of the instrument cluster:
- Standing lights ON
- Circuit 15R ON
After bus idle, the instrument cluster remains active for t = 40 s. If a fault exists, this time is extended to t = 120 s.
Additional function requirements for indicator lamp test
- Terminal 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 status as of production date April 3rd, 2018 (except Model 463.342) over the user interface CAN or up to production date April 2nd, 2018 or for Model 463.342 over suspension CAN 2 to the instrument cluster.
Function sequence for indicator lamp test
The indicator lamp test serves the function test of certain warning lamps and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster carries out this test automatically each time circuit 15 is switched on.
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the indicator lamp test:
- Fuel reserve indicator lamp
- Seat belt warning lamp
- Parking brake indicator lamp
- Supplemental restraint system indicator lamp
- Anti-lock braking system indicator lamp
- ESP®/ASR OFF warning lamp
- Standing lights indicator lamp (Model 463.272/273)
- Electronic Stability Program warning lamp
- Brake system warning lamp
- Coolant temperature warning lamp
- Engine diagnosis indicator lamp
- DISTRONIC warning lamp (with code EZ9 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
- Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (with CODE RY6 (Tire pressure monitor)) Brake force distribution warning lamp
- Preglow indicator lamp (diesel engine)
The indicator lamp test is terminated when the engine is started.
The function of the following indicator lamps is not checked:
- Left turn signal indicator light
- Right turn signal indicator light
- High beam indicator lamp
- Rear fog lamp indicator lamp
- Front fog lamp indicator lamp (Model 463.202/236/237/242/346)
- Low beam indicator lamp
