Function requirements, general

Manual interior lights control in general

The manual interior lights control is used to switch the interior illumination, the reading illumination, the mirror lamp and the glove compartment illumination on and off.

The manual interior lights control function encompasses the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for interior illumination

The overhead control panel control unit reads in the status of the front dome lamp button and the status of the rear dome lamp button directly and transmits these via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

The following components of the interior illumination are switched on or off manually by operating the front dome lamp button:

The following components of the interior illumination are switched on or off manually by operating the rear dome lamp button:

As of 01.06.2018, the interior lighting in the rear passenger compartment can also be switched on or off via voice control on vehicles with code 531 (COMAND APS). The driver hands-free system microphone is directly read in by the head unit for this purpose. The head unit processes the speech signals and transmits the operation signals via the user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the interior illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

IMPORTANT Model 238 as of 6/1/18

up to model year 2021

with code 531 (COMAND APS)

Detailed information on the voice control can be found in a separate document.

Additionally, the following component parts are directly actuated by the front SAM control unit in vehicles without code 877 (Ambient lighting) and without code 891 (Premium ambient lighting):

In vehicles with code 877 (Ambient lighting) or code 891 (Premium ambient lighting), the front SAM control unit transmits the request to the ambient lighting control unit via the interior CAN. The ambiance illumination control unit then actuates the following components over the vehicle interior ambiance illumination-LIN:

IMPORTANT If the automatic interior lights control is activated after opening a door, it can be switched off manually using the reading lamp button. The respective area is then switched off completely.

Function sequence for reading illumination

The reading illumination serves to illuminate a defined area in front of the user, without having a distracting dazzling effect on the driver. The overhead control panel control unit directly reads in the status of the corresponding buttons and sends it via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the reading illumination via interior CAN to the overhead control panel control unit, which then directly actuates the corresponding components.

The following reading illumination components can be switched on or off manually by pressing the corresponding button:

As of 01.06.2018, the left reading lamp and the right reading lamp can also be switched on and off via voice control in vehicles with code 531 (COMAND APS).

Function sequence for mirror lamp

The following mirror lamp components can be switched on or off manually by opening or closing the respective mirror cover:

IMPORTANT To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), the power supply is interrupted t = 30 min. following circuit 15 OFF. The power supply for the left sun visor mirror lamp and the right sun visor mirror lamp is switched off when the vehicle is locked using the central locking (CL [ZV]) system.

Additional function requirements for glove compartment illumination

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 to the front SAM control unit via interior CAN.

Function sequence for glove compartment illumination

The glove compartment lamp switch is supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit. Voltage is switched through to the glove compartment lamp by opening the glove compartment door.

After switching off circuit 15C, the glove compartment lamp is switched off after t = 40 s.
