General 

Active ambient lighting is a light strip that covers the vehicle interior. It alters the atmosphere in the vehicle interior through changes in the dynamic light. Depending on the equipment installed, a relationship can be established between the coloration of the light strip and various vehicle functions. When switched off, the active ambient lighting appears as a bright black strip.

Active ambient lighting can display programs, effects and warnings. They differ from one another in terms of their priority and they can overlap each other.

The active ambient lighting is controlled by the active ambient lighting control unit. Each section of the light strip contains a multitude of LEDs whose light in combination with a given look produces an overall appearance. The active ambient lighting control unit can actuate each LED individually in up to 64 different colors.

• Ambient lighting not switched off via range maximization (equipment-dependent)

Active ambient lighting 

Active ambient lighting switches on after the following events:

• Unlocking of vehicle (except via the emergency key)
• Circuit15R ON

Active ambient lighting switches off after the following events:

• 10s after the vehicle is locked
• 20s after circuit 15R OFF

The light strip of the active ambiance illumination encompasses the following elements:

• Active ambient lighting on cockpit at left
• Active ambient lighting on cockpit at right
• Active ambient lighting in left front door
• Active ambient lighting in right front door
• Active ambient lighting in left rear door (depending on model)
• Active ambient lighting in right rear door (depending on model)

The user can make the following settings for the active ambient lighting through the multimedia system:

• Brightness
• Programs (colors and color combinations)
• Effects

Brightness can be adjusted for different zones.

Otherwise, the brightness is automatically adjusted depending on the ambient brightness recorded by the light sensor. One brightness level each is specified for night and day.

Activation of programs 

Programs run throughout the entire strip lighting for the active ambient lighting.

The user can make the following settings for programs through the multimedia system:

• Single color illumination (display preset color)
• Multicolored illumination (display of preset color combinations)
• Multicolored dynamic illumination (display preset interactive color combinations)

Interactive color combinations adapt the color and brightness of the strip lighting to match certain states of the vehicle or its surroundings, e.g. the display style selected for the instrument cluster.

Additionally, the ENERGIZING COMFORT system can request light programs be executed in active ambient lighting.

Activation of effects 

Effects provide the driver with brief feedback about the condition of the vehicle. They are triggered by specific events.

Effects in active ambient lighting have a higher priority than programs. Programs are overlaid with effects at least in some areas of the active ambient lighting. Effects occur only once. Several effects may be visible at the same time.

The following events can trigger effects in the active ambient lighting:

• Unlocking of vehicle ("Welcome" effect)
• Opening any door ("Welcome" effect)
• Closing driver door ("Farewell" effect)
• Locking of vehicle ("Welcome" effect)
• Temperature change in vehicle interior ("Air conditioning function" effect in strip lighting, separated for each air conditioning zone)
• User activates the speech recognition system with key word ("Voice dialog" effect, depending on given dialog status, relative to seat, if applicable)

The user cannot adjust effect brightness.

Activation of warnings 

Warnings in active ambient lighting have a higher priority than effects or programs. Programs and effects are overlaid by warnings at least in some areas of the active ambient lighting.

Warnings are displayed at a minimum brightness that may be greater than the brightness set by the user. This should ensure that warnings are always shown with sufficient brightness.

The following events can trigger warnings in the active ambient lighting:

• Active Blind Spot Assist warning
• Active Lane Keeping Assist warning
• Active Brake Assist warning
• Exit warning (displayed at corresponding open door)
