Overview

This document contains information on:

General

The front passenger airbag is located under the instrument panel above or instead of the glove compartment.

The front passenger airbag is intended to protect the front passenger from injuries in the event of a frontal impact through a very inflow of gas into the plastic bag between the vehicle occupants and parts of the vehicle interior.

The airbag also consists of a gas generator, squib and plastic bag.

Function

If the airbag sensor registers an accident, one or more airbag sensors measure first of all the severity of the accident. An ignition current then flows immediately from the airbag trigger device into a pyrotechnical container, which then triggers an ignition. The pyrotechnical material burns, the generated gas fills the airbag.

The front passenger airbag can have a one or two-stage design (Canada version, USA version). With the two-stage variant, the deployment of airbag can be adjusted.

By igniting the bleed valve squib, the airbag deployment can be regulated as required.

Operational readiness of the airbag is constantly monitored by the diagnostic system. If power is interrupted, the ignition energy is maintained by a capacitor.

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit directly actuates the front passenger airbag squibs.
