General
The driver's airbag is installed in the steering wheel and is intended to protect the driver from injuries in the event of a frontal impact with very fast gas flow into the plastic bag between vehicle occupants and parts of the vehicle interior.
The airbag consists of, among other things, the gas generator, squib and plastic bag.
Function
If the airbag sensor registers an accident, one or more airbag sensors first measure the severity of the accident. An ignition current is sent immediately from the airbag triggering device into a pyrotechnical container, which triggers an ignition. The pyrotechnical material burns, the generated gas fills the airbag.
On vehicles with the Canada version or the USA version, the driver's airbag has a two-stage design, whereby an adjustable deployment is reached.
The operational readiness of the airbag is constantly monitored by the diagnostic system. In the event of a current interruption, the ignition energy is maintained by a capacitor.
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit directly actuates the driver's airbag squibs.
