Shown on engine 177, belt pulley with markings
Screw measuring tool (5) onto bracket (6) of the clamping device for poly-V-belt on the alternator.
The measuring tool (5) must point to the marking (1); this represents 400 CKA after ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
Engine 176 in model 463
Engine 177 in model 205
Use pointer 177 589 01 21 01 from
measuring tool (5).
Engine 178 in model 190
Use pointer 177 589 01 21 02-589-01 21 01 from
measuring tool (5).
- Turn crankshaft with the
box wrench at the center bolt of the belt pulley in the direction of engine rotation until the
measuring tool (5) stands at the marking (4).
Only turn engine at the center bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation using the specified
box wrench.
Otherwise, damage to the engine or even failure of the engine may occur.
Never turn crankshaft against direction of engine rotation.
Engine damage can occur otherwise.
The marking (4) represents a 530 CKA after ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
- Check positions of the segmented discs (8, 9, 10, 11) through the openings of the position sensors of the camshafts.
Approx half of all four segmented discs (8, 9, 10, 11) must be visible.
If approx half of all four segmented discs (8, 9, 10, 11) are not visible:
↓
Turn crankshaft with the
box wrench at the center bolt of the belt pulley a further rotation in the direction of engine rotation until the
measuring tool (5) stands at the marking (4).
The marking (4) represents a 53° CKA after ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
Approx half of all four segmented discs (8, 9, 10, 11) must now be visible.
- Turn crankshaft at belt pulley with
box wrench just less than two further revolutions in direction of engine rotation until
measuring tool (5) is at marking (1).
Only turn engine at the center bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation using the specified
box wrench.
Otherwise, damage to the engine or even failure of the engine may occur.
Never turn crankshaft against direction of engine rotation.
Engine damage can occur otherwise.
The marking (1) represents a 400 CKA after ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
Remove secondary chain tensioner of left cylinder bank from this position.
If the crankshaft was turned too far,
↓
Continue to turn crankshaft with the
box wrench at center bolt of belt pulley just under two revolutions in direction of engine rotation until
measuring tool (5) is at marking (1).
The marking (1) represents a 400 CKA after ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
- Turn crankshaft with the
box wrench at the center bolt of the belt pulley in the direction of engine rotation further until the
measuring tool (5) stands at the marking (2).
Only turn engine at the center bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation using the specified
box wrench.
Otherwise, damage to the engine or even failure of the engine may occur.
Never turn crankshaft against direction of engine rotation.
Engine damage can occur otherwise.
The marking (2) represents a 900 CKA after ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
Remove secondary chain tensioner of right cylinder bank from this position.
If the crankshaft was turned too far,
↓
Continue to turn crankshaft with the
box wrench at center bolt of belt pulley just under two revolutions in direction of engine rotation until
measuring tool (5) is at marking (1).
The marking (1) represents a 40° CKA after ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
- Turn crankshaft with the
box wrench at the center bolt of the belt pulley further in the direction of engine rotation until the measuring tool (5) stands at the marking (3).
Only turn engine at the center bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation using the specified
box wrench.
Otherwise, damage to the engine or even failure of the engine may occur.
Never turn crankshaft against direction of engine rotation.
Engine damage can occur otherwise.
The marking (3) represents a 2350 CKA after ignition TDC.
Remove primary chain tensioner in this position.
- Turn crankshaft with the
box wrench at the center bolt of the belt pulley approx. one and a half rotations further in the direction of engine rotation until the
measuring tool (5) stands at the marking (4).
↓
Turn crankshaft with the
box wrench at the center bolt of the belt pulley a further rotation in the direction of engine rotation until the
measuring tool (5) once again stands at the marking (4).
The marking (4) represents a 530 CKA after ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
Approx half of all four segmented discs (8, 9, 10, 11) must now be visible.
If approx half of all four segmented discs (8, 9, 10, 11) are not visible:
↓
Re-adjust timings since the timing chains are skipped.
