General
Charging of the battery while driving assures vehicle mobility and it provides a stable supply of electrical energy for all electrical consumers. The energy management calculates the charge level of the battery beforehand. For the charging process, it is necessary to determine the specified voltage which must be present at the terminals of the battery in order to charge the battery in an optimum manner.
While driving, the battery can be charged by various measures, depending on the version of the on-board electrical system. In all cases, additional electrical energy is either generated or provided by another energy source (vehicles with 48 V technology, hybrid vehicles or electric vehicles).

Function
12 V on-board electrical system battery
The 12 V on-board electrical system battery is charged by one of the following measures:
- Energy generation by 12 V alternator (vehicles with 12 V alternator)
- Energy transfer from other energy sources (vehicles without 12 V alternator), e.g. high-voltage battery (hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles)
Vehicles without 12 V alternator:
Vehicles with 48 V technology, hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles do not have a 12 V alternator. On these vehicles, the necessary electrical energy for the 12 V on-board electrical system is provided via a DC/DC converter by the 48 V battery or by the high-voltage battery.
24-V on-board electrical system battery (vehicles with on-board electrical system 12 V/24 V)
The 24 V on-board electrical system battery is charged by the energy generation of the 24 V alternator.
Secondary 12 V on-board electrical system battery (vehicles for conditionally automated parking or driving)
The secondary 12 V on-board electrical system battery is charged by energy transfer from the 12 V on-board electrical system.
48 V battery (vehicles with 48 V technology)
The 48 V battery is charged by the energy generation of the starter-alternator in generator mode (recuperation).
High-voltage battery (hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles)
The high-voltage battery is not fully charged by the energy generation of the electric machine in generator mode (recuperation), but the state of charge is primarily maintained through recuperation.
Depending on the model, AMG vehicles have a belt-driven starter alternator with high-voltage connection which can also charge the high-voltage battery in generator mode.
