General
The window airbag is located along the left and right roof paneling under the headliner and it is intended in the event of a side impact or a collision to protect the head area of vehicle occupants facing towards an impact.
The airbag consists of, among other things, the gas generator, squib and plastic bag.
Function
If the airbag sensor registers an accident, one or more airbag sensors first measure the severity of the accident. An ignition current is sent immediately from the airbag triggering device into a pyrotechnical container, which triggers an ignition. The pyrotechnical material burns, the generated gas fills the airbag.
The windowbag protects the vehicle occupants from injury in the event of a side impact or a rollover in the vicinity of the windows from the A-pillar to the C-pillar.
The operational readiness of the airbag is constantly monitored by the diagnostic system. In the event of a current interruption, the ignition energy is maintained by a capacitor.
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit directly actuates the windowbag squibs.
