General
The front side airbags are located on the outer side of the driver and front passenger seat backrest and they are intended to protect the chest region of the vehicle occupants facing towards the side in the event of side collisions.
The side airbags in the rear can, as shown, be located on the outside of the seat cushion or behind the side trim in the rear passenger compartment depending on the vehicle.
The airbag consists of, among other things, the gas generator, squib and plastic bag.
Function
If the airbag sensor registers an accident, one or more airbag sensors first measure the severity of the accident. An ignition current is sent immediately from the airbag triggering device into a pyrotechnical container, which triggers an ignition. The pyrotechnical material burns, the generated gas fills the airbag.
The side airbags protect the vehicle occupants in the event of a side impact in the area of the doors and the B and C-pillars before injuries occur.
The operational readiness of the airbag is constantly monitored by the diagnostic system. In the event of a current interruption, the ignition energy is maintained by a capacitor.
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit directly actuates the side airbag squibs.
