General
The center airbag is integrated into the seat backrest on the inner side of the driver's seat. If deployed, the center airbag expands between two vehicle occupants, e.g. level with the head and shoulders. The center airbag is used, in particular, in the event of a side impact, to reduce injuries caused by vehicle occupants colliding with the head restraint or seat backrest of the adjacent seat. In passenger cars, the center airbag is installed, e.g. in the seat backrest, center console, roof or the rear shelf.
Function
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit receives a crash signal from the sensor system installed in the vehicle and actuates the center airbag squib directly.
