General
The belt airbags are inflatable seat belts that are intended to increase the contact surface of the seat belt with the vehicle occupant's upper body in the event of a severe frontal impact. This can reduce the risk of injury.
The belt airbag unit with the rear passenger compartment belt airbag squibs is located at the END fitting of the respective seat belt in the rear passenger compartment. The belt airbag is integrated into the seat belt.
The airbag consists of, among other things, the gas generator, squib and plastic bag.
Function
If the airbag sensor registers an accident, one or more airbag sensors first measure the severity of the accident. An ignition current is sent immediately from the airbag triggering device into a pyrotechnical container, which triggers an ignition. The pyrotechnical material burns, the generated gas fills the airbag.
As a result of the actual seat belt being inflated, there is a seat belt extension as well as padding between the vehicle occupant and seat belt in the event of a crash. In this case, the inflatable seat belt strap is intended to distribute the force applied to the vehicle occupants through the larger contact surface now available. As a result, the load on the chest can be reduced.
The operational readiness of the airbag is constantly monitored by the diagnostic system. In the event of a current interruption, the ignition energy is maintained by a capacitor.
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit actuates the rear passenger compartment belt airbag squibs directly.
