General
The brake light indicates to the traffic following behind any intention of the driver to decelerate the vehicle. The brake light can be switched on by operating the service brake or by an autonomous application of the brake.
Function requirement
- Circuit 15 ON
Function
When the brake pedal is operated, the brake system registers the driver's deceleration request through a brake light switch or a pedal angle sensor on the brake pedal.
In the event of autonomous brake application, the brake light is actuated by the corresponding driver assistance system.
During maximum full-stop braking, the brake lights flash as they are actuated (except Canada version or USA version).
Depending on the network architecture of the vehicle, either the central signal acquisition and actuation module or the rear signal acquisition and actuation module receives the "switch on brake light" request and actuates the brake lights.
Vehicles with trailer hitch
During trailer operation the brake lights on the trailer are also actuated. Depending on the network architecture of the vehicle, either the signal acquisition and actuation module or the rear signal acquisition and actuation module requests actuation of the brake lights on the trailer. The trailer recognition control unit implements this request.
Except Canada version and USA version
If the vehicle was decelerated by maximum full-stop braking from a speed of at least 70 km/h to less than 3 km/h, the hazard warning flashers are automatically activated.
Canada version or USA version
The turn signal light has higher priority than the brake light.
