Tires:
- For service conversions, compare the tire/disk wheel designation with the entries in the vehicle documents.
- Always replace damaged and defective tires. The repair methods employed by retail tire suppliers are not approved by Mercedes-Benz. Indentations ≤0.8 mm on the side face of the tire are generally safe and permissible.
- Before mounting the tires, the disk wheels should be cleaned in the area of the bead seat.
- Tire valves should generally be changed whenever a tire is mounted.
Not with TPM tire pressure sensors.
- Only use tires listed in the valid Service Information bulletins and repair instructions.
- If the tires have a light spot, the tires and disk wheels must be specifically positioned (matched) on the disk wheels when mounting the tires to ensure the radial trueness of the wheels. Identification of light spots:
- On the tires through a color dot on the outboard side of the tire.
- On steel wheels through a color dot or punch mark on outboard side of the wheel.
- On light-alloy wheels generally on the valve hole.
- If a single tire is replaced, install it on the front axle. This does not apply to vehicles with different tires of varying specifications on the front and rear wheels.
- Always provide all disk wheels with tires of the same construction, same make and same design.
- An appropriate sticker must be attached in the driver's field of view if the permissible maximum speed of an M+S tire is below the maximum speed of the vehicle.
- Installing tires with a higher speed rating is permissible.
- Run-in new tires for approx. 100 km at moderate speed.
- Install unidirectional tires according to the arrow on the side wall of the tire.
- Tires are subject to an aging process with negative effects on the properties of the tires. In order to ensure optimum effectiveness in winter, M+S tires should not be used for longer than 4 years.
Tire pressure
Excessively low tire pressure increases the rolling resistance and increases flexing of the tire. This causes the critical temperature limit to be exceeded (carcass detachment) and destroys the tire. Establish the cause in the event of any pressure loss, and replace the tire if necessary.
Tire pressure monitor
Before replacing a tire, check the manufacturing date of the TPM tire pressure sensor and replace tire pressure sensor if necessary.
- Manufacturer specifications for battery life, 10 years.
Before replacing a tire, check the condition of the TPM tire pressure sensor for damage. It can otherwise lead to function impairments.
- Replace TPM tire pressure sensor if damaged.
Cleaning
The use of high-pressure cleaners with round jet nozzles to clean the wheels can lead to tire damage. Such damage occurs especially on the tire side walls. When using flat-spray nozzles be sure to:
- Maintain a distance of at least 30 cm.
- Do not direct the water jet at a single point on the surface of the tire for any length of time.
Storage and handling
General
- Before putting into storage, clean tires thoroughly and check for damage and adequate tire tread depth.
- Mark the position and running direction of the tires with chalk.
- Store tires in a clean, dry, well-ventilated and temperature-controlled location in which they are protected against sunlight and weather influences.
- Do not store tires in the vicinity of chemicals, solvents or hydrocarbons that can change the nature of the rubber.
- Do not store tires in the vicinity of foreign objects that can penetrate into the rubber (metal spikes, wood...).
- Do not store tires in the vicinity of heat sources, open flames, bulbs, ozone sources or materials that can produce sparks or electrical discharges (transformers, electric motors, welding equipment...).
- Tires below -10°C (14°F) should not be used, stored, moved or shipped.
Tires stored under such conditions will degenerate with the result that they lose their performance.
This applies in particular for vehicles with Ultra High Performance tires .
- Never use tires with cracked rubber or damage to the tire sidewall or the tread.
Store the tires at temperatures above 0°C (32°F).
Lower temperatures can cause cracks in the rubber.
Handling
If tires are stacked for short-term storage, make sure that they are not deformed.
If the tires are stored for longer periods of time, the stack should be rearranged occasionally. Make sure that the tires are not crushed. Accessories must be stored in their original packaging at locations where there is no risk of cuts, cracks or perforation. Tools and aids that do not attack the tires must always be used for handling tires and accessories.
When handling tires, suitable protective clothing must be worn.
Short-term storage (up to 4 weeks)
- Tires may be stacked one on top of another, if possible on pallets.
- The height of the stack must not exceed 1.20 m.
- After 4 weeks, the tires must be rearranged from top to bottom in the stack. If they are mounted on rims, the tires must be stored inflated, upright or lying down, one beside the other on shelves.
Long-term storage:
The tires must be stored upright (on rims or not) on shelves that are at least 10 cm from the floor.
To ensure that they do not deform, they should be rotated slightly once per month.
Disposal
Perform collection, storage and disposal in accordance with the legal requirements and the company's own regulations.
Disk wheels
Do not repair damaged or deformed disk wheels. Otherwise, safety will be compromised. Note the following points:
- When changing wheels, e.g. light alloy wheels for steel wheels, ensure that the wheel bolts required for the spare wheel are enclosed in a clearly visible position.
Model 124, 202
The spare wheel is a steel wheel. Vehicles fitted with light alloy rims at the plant have corresponding wheel bolts enclosed.
- Only use wheels of the same design approved by Mercedes-Benz.
- Strengthened steel wheels are identified by a sticker on the wheel disk.
- On steel and light alloy wheels, the wheel bolts should always be tightened to the specified torque using a torque wrench.
Model 636, 639
The wheel bolts must be retightened after approx. 50 km if new or repainted rims are used or if new wheel bolts are used.
Model 900, 901, 902, 903, 904, 905, 906, 909
Wheel bolts or wheel nuts must be retightened after approx. 50 km. If new or repainted rims are used, the wheel bolts or wheel nuts must also be retightened after 1000 to 5000 km to the specified tightening torque.
- The seat for the tire bead must display no corrosion pits.
- Before inserting a new tire valve clean the contact surfaces on the disk wheel.
Tire label
The European Union directive stipulates the labeling of tires with regard to fuel efficiency and other essential parameters. Car and commercial vehicle tires as of 01.11.2012 must be marked with a tire label. This provides information on the fuel efficiency (1), the wet adhesion (2) and the external rolling noise (3) of the tires.
The tire label contains information on the following tire parameters:
- Fuel efficiency (1): depicted by a pictogram and expressed in classes from A to G.
- Wet adhesion (2): depicted by a pictogram and expressed in classes from A to G.
- External rolling noise (3): depicted by a pictogram and expressed as a passing noise in dB.
