Central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle
The radio provides the user with a structured and standard user interface for the following system components:
- Audio system (e.g. "Radio", "CD" (as well as MP3) and further multimedia devices)
- Telephony (with telephone book function)
- Internet
- sound settings (e.g. "bass", "treble", "fader", "balance")
- System settings (e.g. "Brightness" and "Contrast" of the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8))
- Navigation (with CODE 522 (Audio 20 radio) and CODE 357 (Card navigation))
The user interface is shown on the Audio/COMAND display. Using the "Vehicle functions" menu, equipment-dependent contents and functions of additional systems (e.g. climate control, seat adjustments) can be shown and controlled on the Audio/COMAND display.
Model 172.4 as of model year 2017
with code 357 (Map navigation)
with code 522 (Audio 20 radio)
The navigation functions can be used via a voice control system integrated in the navigation system.
Integration of Smartphones
The radio enables the integration of Smartphones. In order to ensure that the content is prepared in a vehicle-related way, only apps that have been developed for the following integration standards are supported:
- Android Auto (Google)
- CarPlay (Apple)
In order to be able to use the Smartphone apps, the Smartphone must be connected via the USB (Universal Serial Bus) to USB connector 2 (A90/5x2) of the multimedia connection unit (A90/5) and the integration standard selected via the telephone menu.
If a Smartphone is connected and the Android Auto or CarPlay integration standard is active, the radio is switched to a special operating mode ("integration mode") in which not all radio functions can be used. The following radio functions are not available if Android Auto or CarPlay is activated:
- Media player
- Navigation (equipment dependent)
- Telephony
Model 172.4 as of model year 2018 with code 522 (Audio 20 radio)
Integration mode can be switched off via the radio.
The radio (AM and FM), vehicle settings and safety-relevant functions such as the emergency call function (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or with code 362 (HERMES LTE)) can still be used.
With Android Auto, the following usage restrictions apply for the telephony: Calls can only be made through the connected Smartphone. Telephony with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP)) is not possible.
When in integration mode, the radio supports the Smartphone applications as follows:
- Volume setting for all audio signals
- Forwarding of control signals (e.g. from radio buttons, from the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9), long pressing of the voice control system ON button (S111s4), pressing of the accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3))
- Forwarding of signals from inside rearview mirror microphone (A67b1) (e.g. for voice control or telephony)
- Audio outputs (e.g. for voice control or telephony) over the speaker system or forwarding of the signals to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code 810 (Sound system))
- Muting radio reception (mute function), e.g. for Smartphone telephony
- Forwarding position data (e.g. GPS signals (global navigation system), signals from gyro sensor, wheel speed signals) (with code 522 (Audio 20 radio))
- Forwarding of generated video signals from the Smartphone to the Audio/COMAND display
- Forwarding of status information for displaying in the instrument cluster (A1)
- Forwarding of data (arrow displays) to the instrument cluster as part of Android Auto navigation mode (with code 522 (Audio 20 radio) as of 01.06.2017)
The Smartphone applications themselves are not shown in the instrument cluster.
If the Smartphone is being used to make a call, the radio receives and sends telephone signals from and to the Smartphone via the Bluetooth® antenna (A2/91) for Android Auto, and via the USB connection to the multimedia connection unit for CarPlay.
Reading in of input signals as well as actuation of output media and system components
The radio sends and receives signals via the following connections:
- CAN
- Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
- Ethernet
- Direct line
CAN
The radio is a subscriber of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the interior CAN (CAN B):
- The telematics CAN is used by the radio, e.g. to receive the control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel.
- Via the telematics CAN, the radio sends control signals to the Audio/COMAND display for example
- The radio receives, e.g. the signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) over the interior CAN from the instrument cluster.
- Via the interior CAN, the radio sends e.g. navigation displays (with code 357 (Map navigation)) to the instrument cluster and position data (with code 522 (Audio 20 radio)) for the HERMES control unit (N112/9) (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or code 362 (HERMES LTE)) to the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1).
Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
The radio exchanges data with the following control units over MOST:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system))
- Tuner unit (A90/4) (with CODE 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio) or with CODE 537 (Digital radio (DAB)))
Ethernet
The radio is connected to the diagnostic connector (X11/4) via the Ethernet.
Direct line
The radio is equipped with the following direct connections:
