Location 

The radio is located in the center console.

Tasks 

The radio has the following tasks:

Central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle 

The radio provides the user with a structured and uniform user interface that is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).

Reading in the controls and input signals 

The input factors are read in via the following connections:

Direct line 

The radio is equipped with the following direct connections (inputs):

CAN 

The radio is a subscriber of the interior CAN (CAN B) and the telematics CAN (CAN A).

Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) (with code 510 (Audio 20 CD with 6-disk CD changer); with code 523 (Audio 20 CD) and code 494 (USA version)) 

The radio receives control and audio signals from the following control units:

Evaluation of input factors 

The input values are processed in the radio.

Activation of output media and system components 

The following direct output signals are possible:

Function 

The status of the buttons on the radio operating panel is read in and made available to the central computer. The button operations undergo further processing in the central computer and are forwarded via MOST (with code 510 (Audio 20 CD with 6-disk CD changer); with code 523 (Audio 20 CD) and code 494 (USA version)), telematics CAN or interior CAN to the other system components in the form of messages. If the "ON" button on the radio is pressed, the radio switches on. The volume for audio and video sources is regulated by turning the "ON" button. The left button group can be used to activate the audio source requested by the user

CD drive 

The integrated CD drive can be used to play audio CDs (including in MP3 format).
