Audio/COMAND operating instructions, general
This description attempts to present operation of the full functional scope for the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) while taking all the vehicle's standard and special equipment, as known at the copy deadline, into account. National-specific and equipment-specific deviations hereto are possible. The vehicle is equipped with digital operating instructions, which can be called up on the driver information system.
Digital operating instructions: The language for the operating instructions can be selected. Content can be called up through the table of contents, a visual search on the vehicle or using a keyword. The digital operator's manual also provides animations.
The functions and menu navigation for the driver information system are shown on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8). In vehicles with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System), the menu guidance and functions of the information system can be shown in the rear on the left rear display (A40/5) or the right rear display (A40/6).

Model 222

with code 864 (Rear compartment entertainment package)
The rear information system can be operated with the remote control or with the rear handset (with CODE 855 (Telephony in rear) or with CODE 856 (Business telephony in rear)).
Audio/COMAND control panel
The Audio/COMAND control panel is located on the center console. As the main control panel, the Audio/COMAND control panel includes the Audio/COMAND controller (A40/9s11), which makes navigation in menus and lists, the selection of display-generated buttons (Softkeys) and the entry of characters possible by rotating, pushing and pressing. Base functions can be called up using separate buttons, e.g. navigation using the Navigation button (A40/9s10). The volume control button (A40/9s13) is designed as a drum controller. Rotating the volume adjustment button in a vertical direction (up or down) adjusts the volume. Pressing the volume adjustment button mutes the audio source (mute function).
The Audio/COMAND control panel does not have any keys that can be configured by the user (Favorite keys).
Telephone keypad
The telephone keypad is located in the hand rest of the center console and is equipped with a heated cover that must be opened before use. The telephone keypad consists of a 12-key keypad, a button for accepting phone calls/dialing, a "CLEAR" button for deleting entries, a button for rejecting phone calls/hanging up and a star button for switching to the favorites function.
Outside the "Telephone" menu the telephone keypad can be used for different functions depending on the context. The key assignments appear on the Audio/COMAND display when the keys are pressed.
Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
The voice control system (VCS [SBS]) is switched on using the voice control system on button (S111s4) and off using the voice control system off button (S110s2). When the voice control system is switched on, the functions of the driver information system can be operated using voice commands in dialog with the VCS. The voice control system can be operated by spelling out or entering complete words.
Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
The multifunction steering wheel button groups are located on the multifunction steering wheel, and they can be used to operate the functions of the driver information system without taking the hands off the steering wheel.
Remote control (with code 816 (Entertainment remote control), with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System) or with code 867 (SPLITVIEW))
The respective display element is selected using the drum controller. Operation takes place using a 12-key keypad, buttons and the rotating control, the navigation buttons and the "OK" button, which emulate the control functions of the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel. An LED status indicator indicates the functional capability of the remote control and successful transmission of the control signals.
The remote control must be paired with the COMAND controller unit COMAND (connected).
Rear handset (with code 855 (Telephony in rear) or with code 856 (Business telephony in rear))
The rear handset features a button group and a touchscreen (touch sensitive). The following functions can be operated with rear handset:
- Telephony
- SMS
- Seat adjustments (with CODE 406 (Multicontour seats in rear))
Touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad))
Via the touchpad, the user input (operation gestures and handwriting recognition) is detected and it recognizes when you rest your hand on it. The gestures can be performed using one or two fingers.
The following 3 buttons can be actuated on the touchpad:
- "Back" button (A105s1)
- Background audio button (A105s2) (enables the operation of the audio source without leaving the current menu)
- Home and Favorites button (A105s3) (enables quick access to the base functions (navigation, radio, media, telephone and Internet, vehicle) and to the functions saved as "Favorites")
Application program for mobile phone (App) (accessories)
If the user has installed the application program enabled for his/her vehicle on his/her mobile phone, he/she can operate the functions defined in the application program via the mobile phone. The control signals are received by the WLAN antenna (A2/83) and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit.
The mobile phone must be paired (connected) with the COMAND controller unit and the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) function must be activated at the COMAND controller unit.
Favorites function: The buttons that are available for these functions can be freely assigned by the user. If a favorites function is active, the action that the user has assigned to the button is performed by pressing the button. The favorites function makes the operation of frequently used functions quicker, more convenient and easier. The favorites function is enabled (the integrated LED illuminates in red) and disabled again (the integrated LED goes off) using the star button. All buttons of the telephone keypad with the exception of the star button can be used as favorite buttons, i.e. freely assigned by the user. The assignment of the favorite buttons is shown on the Audio/COMAND display. The assignment of a favorite button that has been touched by the user (but not yet pressed) is highlighted on the Audio/COMAND display.
