Remove/Install Automatic Transmission With Torque Converter - AR27.10-P-0500MNL

Transmission 725.0 in model 217, 222 with engine 176 except code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)

24.06.2022 Special tool 001 589 65 09 00 changed to 177 589 00 03 00. Operation step 21, 34.  
15.06.2022 Only turn engine at the center Bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation using the specified SPECIAL TOOL box wrench. Otherwise, damage to the engine or even failure of the engine may occur. AR27.20-P-0001-01EWM

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
WARNING Risk of injury.  Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area of mechanical components when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A
WARNING Risk of injury.  Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
CAUTION Risk of injury  to skin and eyes due to handling of transmission oil. Health risk caused by swallowing transmission oil Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Do not pour transmission oil into beverage bottles.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Shift the transmission (1) into neutral position.    
2 Release parking brake.    
3 Disconnect the ground line for the on-board electrical system battery (G1).   AR54.10-P-0003LF
4 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift.   AR00.60-P-0100CW
5 Remove bottom engine compartment paneling.   AR61.20-P-1105LF
6 Loosen catalytic converters. Left catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0101MNL
    Right catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0102MNL
7 Release starter wiring harness from starter wiring harness holder at top.    
8 Remove upper screw of starter wiring harness holder.    
9 Remove oil lines.   AR27.55-P-0600MNK
10 Raise and secure rack-and-pinion steering.   AR46.20-P-0600LF
11 Remove lower screw of starter wiring harness holder.    
12 Remove alternator wiring harness holder from transmission (1).    
13 Remove rear propeller shaft.   AR41.10-P-0050LF
14 Remove right holder (6).    
15 Disconnect ground line (2) of transmission (1).    
16 Unhook ground line (2) from transmission (1).    
17 Remove heat shield from transmission (1).    
18 Release and disconnect electrical connector of transmission (1).    
19 Remove transmission wiring harness holder from torque converter housing.    
20 Remove cover (3).    
21 Remove torque converter (10) from drive plate (13).   AR27.20-P-0001-01EWM 
    NOTES
Only turn engine at the center Bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation using the specified box wrench.
Otherwise, damage to the engine or even failure of the engine may occur.
NOTES Do not use an impact wrench or compressed air tool to remove the Bolts.
 
    Otherwise, the threaded unions (14) in the drive plate (13) will be damaged.

22 Remove starter from transmission (1), place to one side with connected lines and fasten.   AR15.30-P-7100MNL
    NOTES Secure starter against falling down. Otherwise damage will occur.  
23 Remove rear engine carrier from underbody.   AR22.10-P-4360OIA
24 Remove screws (19). SPECIAL TOOL Set of flexible head wrenches Fig 3
25 Remove transmission (1) with torque converter (10). NOTES Secure the torque converter (10) to prevent it from dropping down.
Otherwise damage will occur.
 
26 Remove torque converter (10). If necessary. AR27.20-P-0050EWM 
27 Remove corrosion from crankshaft.   AR03.20-P-1000-01A
    Multi-purpose paste *BR00.45-Z-1009-06A 
    Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
28 Check threaded unions (14) in drive plate (13). If damaged or loose threaded unions (14) are present:

Install a new clutch plate (13).

INSTALLING Install     
29 Insert torque converter (10). After removing the torque converter (10). AR27.20-P-0050EWM 
30 Install transmission (1) with torque converter (10). IMPORTANT While doing so, align the bores of the torque converter (10) with the threaded unions (14) in the drive plate (13).  
31 Tighten screws (19). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/Bolt, transmission to engine *BA27.10-P-1001-04H

32 Install rear engine carrier at underbody.   AR22.10-P-4360OIA
33 Release mounting of starter and mount starter onto transmission (1).   AR15.30-P-7100MNL
34 Mount torque converter (10) onto drive plate (13).   AR27.20-P-0001-01EWM 
    NOTES Only turn engine at the center Bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation using the specified box wrench.
Otherwise, damage to the engine or even failure of the engine may occur.
NOTES Do not use an impact wrench/driver or compressed air tool to screw in the Bolts. Otherwise, the threaded unions (14) in the drive plate (13) will be damaged.
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, torque converter/rotor to drive plate/star-shaped drive plate *BA27.20-P-1001-01D 
    SPECIAL TOOL Ring wrench Fig 4

35 Install cover (3).    
36 Attach transmission wiring harness holder at torque converter housing. TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 *BA00.10-P-1002-01A 
37 Plug in electrical connector of transmission (1) and lock.    
38 Install heat shield at transmission (1). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/Bolt, heat shield to oil pan *BA27.10-P-1009-04H 
39 Hook ground line (2) onto transmission (1).    
40 Connect ground line (2) to transmission (1). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, ground line to transmission housing *BA27.10-P-1024-04H 
41 Install right holder (6). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, exhaust system bracket to transmission *BA49.10-P-1005-02N 
42 Install rear propeller shaft.   AR41.10-P-0050LF
43 Attach alternator wiring harness holder at transmission (1). TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 *BA00.10-P-1002-01A 
44 Install lower screw of starter wiring harness holder. TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 *BA00.10-P-1002-01A 
45 Release locking clip and lower rack-and-pinion steering.   AR46.20-P-0600LF
46 Install oil lines.   AR27.55-P-0600MNK
47 Install upper screw of starter wiring harness holder. TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 *BA00.10-P-1002-01A 
48 Secure starter wiring harness at starter wiring harness holder at top.    
49 Attach catalytic converters. Left catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0101MNL
    Right catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0102MNL
50 Connect ground line of on-board electrical system battery (G1).   AR54.10-P-0003LF
51 Check and correct transmission oil level.   AR27.00-P-0270EWN 
52 Connect diagnostic system, read out fault memory and clear if necessary.    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
53 Perform transmission adaptation with vehicle diagnosis system. After replacement or repair of transmission (1).  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
54 Reset data on service life of torque converter lockup clutch with the vehicle diagnosis system. After replacement or repair of torque converter (10).  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
55 Perform engine test run and check transmission (1) for proper operation and leak tightness.    
56 Install lower engine compartment lining.   AR61.20-P-1105LF
57 Disconnect vehicle from vehicle lift.   AR00.60-P-0100CW
HEADLESS SCREWS: BOLTS AND NUTS, COARSE-PITCH THREAD
