Turn Engine To Top Dead Center Position - AR01.10-P-1000-01SZ
Engine 176, 177, 178
Engine 176, 177
When performing all work, ensure absolute cleanliness and compliance with work procedure.
Only rotate engine in direction of engine rotation using indicated
box wrench. If engine was rotated past position during setting of timings, further rotate engine and/or crankshaft again by approx. 720° until correct position is reached.
If engine was rotated once opposite direction of engine rotation and/or without chain tensioner and/or without use of
holding device, repeat entire setting process for timings.
Engine damage right up to engine failure will otherwise occur.
The engine timings are set at a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 (8), while the engine timings are checked at a 53° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 (18).
- Rotate engine at center bolt of crankshaft using
box wrench until engine is at ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
If required.
Only rotate engine in direction of engine rotation at center bolt of crankshaft using
box wrench. Timing chain will otherwise skip and engine damage will occur.
A fixing of belt pulley (12) of crankshaft by means of
drift (2) is possible at a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 (8), not however at a 53° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 (18).
If segment gears of camshafts are not correctly in bores of rotational speed sensors, further rotate engine by 360° and check position of segment gears again.
If no marking has been applied to oil pan, attach
measuring tool (9) before the setting.
Basic position of camshafts (11) is set at a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 (8).

Shown on left cylinder head, 530 crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 (18)
To check basic position of camshafts (11), engine must be positioned at a 53° crank angle after ignition TDC of cylinder 1 (18) and cylinder head cover must be installed.
Exhaust camshaft (11) of right cylinder bank is not in center of bore during check of timings, rather segment can only be partially detected.
